Rylie Cother, a sophomore with the Jackson County Central girls basketball team, was runner-up in voting for national Player of the Week in voting conducted by prepgirlshoops.com last week.
Cother was nominated for her effort of a school-record 53 points and 11 rebounds in a 98-92 win at St. James Area.
Placing first in the voting was Shelby Bowman of Biggsville West Central High School in Illinois with 35.08 % of the votes cast. Cother was second with 24.54 %.
The Huskies play at Fairmont in the quarterfinals of the Section 3AA South Sub-Section tournament Saturday.
Iowa state wrestling tournament
JCC graduate Ben Caven, head wrestling coach at West Lyon, had three qualifiers including one place winner in Class 2A at last weekend’s Iowa state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.
Ryan Bahnson placed seventh at 113 pounds for the Wildcats.
Also competing for West Lyon were Evan Erpenbach (106) and Emmitt Fleshman (195).
A week after winning the Class 2A dual championship, Osage also won the traditional state title. The Green Devils were first with 175.5 points, well ahead of second-place Burlington Notre Dame’s 106.5 points.
South Dakota state wrestling tournament
Lennox, coached by area products Blake Crosby and Nathan Simmonds, will have three wrestlers in the state Class A tournament in Rapid City.
Brandon Valley qualified wrestlers in 13 weight classes.
The individual tournament is Thursday and Friday. The dual tournament is Saturday.
College news
Jackson County Central grad Keegan Moore, a senior at Oklahoma, lost a 7-4 decision to No. 10 Travis Wittlake of Oklahoma State in his final regular-season match last Thursday in Stillwater. The Cowboys won the dual over the Sooners 26-6.
OU will wrestle in the Big 12 tournament in Tulsa March 4-5.
Fairmont graduate Jacob Rahn, a sophomore at Iowa Lakes Community College, will wrestle in the NJCAA National Championships March 3-4 in Council Bluffs.
Rahn is rated sixth in the country at 285 pounds.
Martin County West graduate Katie Lange has qualified for the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships March 3-Mar 4 in Cedar Rapids.
Lange won the 143-pound title at the Region IV tournament in Naperville, Ill.
She outscored her opponents 35-0 in her four victories, wrestling for just 10:24 of a possible 24 minutes. The third-ranked Lange claimed a pin in 3:52 over Alana Duggan of Lindenwood, in the semifinals and then scored a 10-0, 4:41 technical fall over No. 8 London Houston of North Central in the finals.
Lange is now 29-6 this season with nine pins and 15 technical falls, and is 47-7 in her college career with 16 pins and 23 technical falls.
Alyssa Williamson, a 5-foot-6 senior guard with the Hamline women’s basketball team, had eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals for the third-seeded Pipers in a 76-64 win over sixth-seeded St. Olaf in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs Tuesday.
Hamline is scheduled to travel to Moorhead to play second-seeded Concordia in the semifinals Friday. Top-seeded Gustavus hosts fourth-seeded Saint Benedict in the other semifinal. The championship game is Sunday at the high seed.
JCC grad Pat Garvin is the head coach of the Bethany Lutheran men’s basketball team that is the number one seed for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament. The Vikings host fourth-seeded Minnesota-Morris Friday.
Bethany is 21-4 overall and 12-2 in the UMAC. The Vikings have tied the school record for wins in a season. BLC has five different players averaging in double figures scoring and is fifth as a team in scoring in NCAA Division III at 91.4.
No. 2 Wisconsin-Superior hosts No. 3 Northwestern in Friday’s other semifinal with the championship game Sunday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The tournament champion receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Two local grads are members of the Iowa Central Community College indoor men’s track and field team that won the team title at last weekend’s Region 11 meet in Storm Lake.
Jackson County Central graduate Andrew Boyum, a freshman, placed 11th out of 20 runners in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:45.17.
Andrew was also part of the Tritons’ tweet promoting the meet. He’s the cool guy in the middle with the shades:
Also for ICCC, sophomore Jake Lewis, a Martin County West grad, was 14th of 20 runners in the 800 meters in 2:08.5.
Iowa Central, ranked fifth in the country, won the team title with 271 points with Iowa Western second with 222.
JCC graduate Olivia Anderson, a freshman at Minnesota State University, was ninth of 16 runners in the mile at the Maverick Invitational Friday in Mankato with a time of 5:46.03.
MSU hosts the NSIC Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday.
Gustavus was at that meet in Mankato, with Fairmont graduate Wyatt Quiring, a senior with the Gusties, first in the 400 meters with a time of 49.84.
Another Fairmont grad, Conner Tordsen, a senior at Dakota State, set a conference record and a personal record at the North Star Athletic Association Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships in Brookings Sunday in helping the Trojans to the team title.
Tordsen shattered the NSAA meet record in the weight throw with an effort of 61 feet, 11 inches on his last attempt, bettering his own previous record of 58-3. It’s his third straight conference weight throw title.
Also, Tordsen was second in the shot put with a PR of 51-8 ½, meeting the NAIA 'A' automatic qualifying mark. That is second-best mark in DSU history.
Still another Fairmont graduate Alli Lardy, a senior at North Dakota, set a PR of 63-7 ½ in placing second in the weight throw at the UND Tune-Up Saturday. That’s No. 4 in program history.
Okay, one more Fairmont grad. Andrew Moeller, a senior at South Dakota State, won the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:54.45 at the SDSU Last Chance Meet.
