Four former local wrestlers came away with wins for the Augustana wrestling team Friday as the Vikings opened their NSIC dual season with a 31-15 win over Minnesota State Moorhead at Elmen Center.
Two of those wrestlers are Martin County West grads. Jaxson Rohman won by fall at 125 pounds and Miles Fitzgerald won by major decision at 157.
Also, Jackson County Central grad Jacob Tvinnereim won by major decision at 174 and former Windom/Mountain Lake wrestler Kade Sammons was a winner by major decision at 141.
Augustana travels to Kearney, Neb. Saturday for duals vs. Nebraska-Kearney and York.
Two more Martin County West graduates wrestled for Augsburg at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Ill.
Blake Jagodzinske, a sophomore, claimed the first college tournament win of his career as he went 4-0 to win the 157-pound title. He opened with two first-period pins, and won the title with a 6-3 decision over Patrick McGraw of John Carroll, who is ranked seventh in NCAA Division III in the country.
Blake is now 17-4 on the year with seven pins, two technical falls, and two major decisions.
His brother, Lucas, went 4-1 in matches wrestled to share fifth-place honors at 149. He won twice by fall and twice by technical fall. He would have faced another Augsburg wrestler in the fifth-place match so that match wasn’t wrestled.
Lucas has a 16-3 record with six falls, three technical falls and four majors.
Another former Martin County Red Bull, Fairmont grad Jacob Rahn, went 3-2 to place sixth at heavyweight at the Buena Vista Open last Sunday. He’s a sophomore at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Rahn then lost his match in a dual vs. Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
Martin County West graduate Katie Lange, a sophomore with the Augsburg women’s wrestling team, placed second at 143 pounds at the North Central College Invitational Sunday.
After a first-round bye, she won two matches by technical fall and one by fall before losing in the finals.
Martin County West graduate Christian Bachenberg, a 5-8 freshman with the Martin Luther College men’s basketball team, scored five points and grabbed two rebounds in 16 minutes of playing time for the Knights in a loss to Wisconsin-Superior Saturday in New Ulm.
JCC grad Pat Garvin’s Bethany Lutheran College men’s basketball team is 9-0 on the season after beating Northland College 111-74 Saturday.
The Vikings are fourth in scoring nationally for NCAA Division III teams, averaging 94.3 points per game.
Bethany has two nonconference road games this week before taking a holiday break, traveling to St. Peter to play Gustavus Wednesday and the facing Buena Vista in Storm Lake Saturday.
Martin County West graduate Alyssa Williamson, a 5-foot-6 senior with the Hamline University women’s basketball team, scored five points for the Pipers in a 77-52 win over Carleton Wednesday. On Saturday she had five points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal in a 53-52 loss to Saint Benedict.
That was the first loss for Hamline, now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC. The Pipers are tied for first in the conference with Saint Benedict and Gustavus. The Pipers are at Crown College in a nonconference game next Saturday.
Two former members of the Windom Area boys hockey team are playing at Dordt University, which is a member of the American Collegiate Hockey League. Each had a three-point game for the Defenders vs. Omaha Saturday in Sioux Center.
Sophomore forward Alex Espenson had a goal and two assists in the 8-1 win over the Mavericks while freshman defenseman Zach Espenson had three assists.
Dordt, which is 15-3, is off until hosting Missouri Jan. 13-14.
New York Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller scored his first goal of the season Monday vs. the St. Louis Blues at Madison Square Garden.
Miller’s goal came at 4:48 of the third period and tied the game 4-4. The Rangers would go on to win 6-4.
Miller, the son of 1988 Fairmont High School graduate Amy Sokoloski, is second on the team in average ice time with 22:05 per game. In 29 games he has nine assists to go with his goal for 10 points. His plus-minus is 0.
