College updates
Several area graduates wrestled for Augustana in a pair of home wins on Alumni Weekend at Elmen Center. The No. 8 Vikings defeated Mary 28-13 Friday and Minot State 36-6 Saturday.
Martin County West grad Jaxson Rohman, a senior rated third in the country, won two matches, both by fall.
JCC graduate Payton Handevidt, a redshirt sophomore, split his matches at 165 pounds as he lost a 4-2 decision to the Marauders and won by injury default vs. the Beavers.
Another Jackson County Central grad, redshirt freshman Logan Butzon, was in the Augustana lineup vs. Mary and lost a decision.
Augustana has duals at Division III No. 1 Augsburg on Friday, Feb. 7 and Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 8.

JCC graduate Kie Anderson, a junior at Concordia College, lost to Division II No. 17 Ryan Henningson of cross-town rival MSU Moorhead in Sunday’s dual between the Cobbers and Dragons. MSU won the dual 28-13.
Anderson’s record on the season is 13-9.
Another JCC grad, Will Freking, is also a junior at Concordia. He’s 10-7.
Martin County West graduate Katie Lange, a freshman with the Grand Valley State women’s wrestling program, went 4-0 at 138 pounds for the Lakers, who went 4-0 as a team at the Bearcat Duals in McKendree, Ill. Sunday.
Lange won one match by fall, two by tech fall and one decision. Grand Valley won 31-10 over William Jewell, 30-16 over Lindenwood University, 28-15 over host McKendree University, and 41-5 over Quincy.
The Lakers are off from competition until they host Northern Michigan in a dual on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Sherburn native Carsen Musser, a freshman with the Colorado College men’s hockey team, earned his first career win in his second start as the Tigers edged No. 11 Arizona State 5-4 Saturday at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz. Saturday.
On Friday, Musser played the final 12:30 in CC’s 4-1 loss to the Sun Devils, recording four saves.
For the season Musser has played 144:04 in six games with a save percentage of .912 and goals against average of 3.33. He has a 1-1 record.
Colorado College is 12-11-1 overall, 6-7-1 in the NCHC. The Tigers host No. 3 and NCHC-leading Western Michigan.
CC is at No. 16 North Dakota the following weekend.
Heron Lake native Hobie Hedquist is a sophomore for the Fighting Hawks. He’s played in seven games and started six with a 2-3 record. In 363:37 he has a goals against average of 2.48 and save percentage of .903.
The Dordt University club men’s hockey team has a 15-2-1 record after a hone split last weekend. Missouri State won 7-1 on Friday, with the Defenders winning 5-2 Saturday.
Three Windom graduates are playing for Dordt.
Junior defenseman Zach Espenson leads the Defenders in scoring with eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points. Senior forward Alex Espenson has 16 points (7-9) and sophomore forward Brady Espenson has nine points (3-6).
Another Espenson will be joining the Dordt program next season. Windom Area senior Nick Espenson announced his commitment to attend the Sioux Center school and play for the Defenders. He leads the Eagles in scoring with 23 points (15-8).
Dordt’s next game will be in Windom as the Defenders play Gustavus Adolphus at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Windom Arena.
Two Jackson County Central graduates competed in the Jim Emmerich Invitational indoor track and field meet in Brookings Saturday.
Peyton Hanson is a sophomore at the University of Sioux Falls. She tied for sixth in the women’s pole vault as she cleared 3.50 meters.
I’m not sure how high that is in feet and inches. Track and field is one of the few areas where distance is measured in meters. The reason for that is explained here:
Also at SDSU, Evan Paplow, a freshman at Iowa Central, was 16th in the 1000 meters in 2:44.42 and 22nd in the mile run in 4:32.47.
Why did they use different units of measure for those events? Freedom.
Football recruiting news
Here are some updates on the recruitment of Jackson County Central football players.
Senior Ben Dahlin received an offer last week from Southwest Minnesota State University:
Dahlin tagged wide receiver coach Paddy Devlin in his post. Scott Underwood completed his third season as head coach of the Mustangs in 2024.
Junior Weston Rowe has had some visitors recently.
Northern Illinois offensive line coach Luke Meadows came to talk about NIU, which also has Huskies for a mascot.
Stopping to watch Rowe work out were North Dakota offensive coordinator Isaac Fruechte and Montana offensive line coach Joe Pawlak.
Another junior, Roman Voss, has had a couple of more in-home visits and has received his 10th offer from a Power Four conference school. You can read more about that in a future newsletter.
Hoops for Heart
This year’s Karson Kent Janssen Memorial Hoops for Heart event is less than two weeks away. It’s set for Saturday, Feb. 8 at MCW Elementary in Trimont.
The Mavericks are hosting Mankato Loyola in basketball that day. The B-squad girls game is at noon, followed by B-squad boys (1:30 p.m.), varsity girls (3 p.m.) and varsity boys (5 p.m.).
Other events scheduled during the day are a silent auction, bake sale, basketball and hoop for donations, three-point shot, and pass the bucket. There will be concessions throughout the day.
There are also ways to be involved if you can’t attend. Check out their Facebook page.

Frank Sinatra hosted “Francis Albert Sinatra Does His Thing,” a television special broadcast on CBS in November 1968.
Also appearing were Diahann Carroll and the Fifth Dimension, who Frank sings with here:
The program’s title references Sinatra's attempts at engaging with the youth culture of the late 1960s. Don Costa was the bandleader.
This special was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Musical Special. The winner in that category was “The Bill Cosby Special.”
