This week’s edition is all news about college student-athletes.
BLC clinches playoff spot
Jackson County Central graduate Gavin Jacobsen would wind up with a no-decision on the mound, but the Bethany Lutheran College baseball team clinched a spot in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference playoffs on Saturday as the Vikings swept a doubleheader from Crown College at ISG Field in Mankato, winning 14-11 and 13-6.
A sophomore at BLC, Jacobsen went six and one-third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out eight. For the season, Jacobsen is 1-2 with a 3.93 earned run average, allowing 25 runs (16 earned) on 30 hits, walking 16 and fanning 58.
Bethany and Wisconsin-Superior are tied for first in the UMAC with 14-3 records with one weekend remaining in conference play. Both teams are scheduled to play three games at home next weekend with the Vikings hosting North Central (2-13) and the Yellowjackets hosting Crown (12-6).
The UMAC tournament will be in Mankato May 11-13.
Kip Janvrin Open
JCC grad Andrew Boyum, a freshman at Iowa Central Community College, competed in the 1500 meters at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College in Indianola.
He was 57th of the 93 runners in the event with a time of 4:12.16.
Drake Relays
Three Fairmont grads had success at the 113th Drake Relays in Des Moines.
Conner Tordsen, a senior at Dakota State, placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 209-4.
Alli Lardy, a senior at North Dakota, was fifth in the women’s shot put with an effort of 47-8 ½.
Also, Wyatt Quiring, a senior at Gustavus, ran on two relay teams for the Gusties. He was on the 4x200 team that placed 17th of 22 teams (1:30.98) and on the distance medley team that was 11th of 13 teams (10:20.25).
Senf fourth
Fairmont graduate Bergen Senf, a junior at St. Olaf College, placed fourth at the weather-shortened St. Olaf-Carleton Spring Invitational on Saturday at Willingers Golf Club in Northfield.
Academic honor
Jackson County Central graduate Keegan Moore, a senior with the Oklahoma wrestling team, has been named to the Winter Academic All-Big 12 Team.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average or higher, either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
