In this week’s edition of Lots O’ Stuff there is lots o’ news about area graduates on the college scene.
Football
Jackson County Central graduate Rudy Voss is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound sophomore quarterback at South Dakota State.
Voss is the No. 2 QB for the Jackrabbits and got to see some playing time in the third quarter of Saturday’s game vs. Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City when starter Mark Gronowski went to the sideline with an injury.
Voss had one rushing attempt for one yard.
The Hawkeyes beat the Jackrabbits 7-3 in the defensive battle. Iowa had 166 yards offense and SDSU 120.
Rudy’ dad, Rod, put out a proud tweet:
The Jackrabbits have their home opener this Saturday, hosting UC Davis at 6 p.m. at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings.
Two JCC grads are freshmen on the St. Olaf College football team.
Will Freking is a 6-2, 220-pound running back and Trace Michelson is a 6-foot, 240-pound offensive lineman.
The Oles opened their season last Saturday with a 44-13 loss to No. 14 Central in Pella, Iowa. St. Olaf has its home opener in Northfield this Saturday vs. Luther.
Volleyball
Jackson County Central graduate Alaina Wolff is a 5-foot-6 junior defensive specialist for South Dakota, which had a 3-0 record in winning the Borderland Invitational in El Paso, Tex.
On Friday Alaina recorded 11 digs in a 3-1 win over Portland State and eight digs and one set assist in a 3-2 win over New Mexico.
On Saturday she had 12 digs in a 3-2 win over host UTEP. The Coyotes trailed the match 2-1 but came back to win, taking the fifth set 17-15.
USD is now 5-1. The Coyotes host CSU Bakersfield and West Virginia Friday at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion and Northern Colorado at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
JCC grad Sadie Voss is a 5-10 freshman outside hitter at the University of Sioux Falls, which went 3-0 at the Chadron State tournament.
Sadie is Alaina’s cousin. Also, Alaina is Sadie’s cousin.
And the aforementioned Rudy is Sadie’s brother and Alaina’s cousin. I kinda regret starting that, but I want to follow it through.
Sadie had a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs in a 3-2 win over Montana State-Billings Friday. She also had one ace serve and one block.
On Saturday she had three kills and four digs playing in one set in the Cougars’ 3-0 win over Minot State. In the final match of the weekend Sadie had 19 kills, nine digs and one set assist in USF’s 3-0 win over Chadron State.
Sioux Falls opens its NSIC schedule this weekend, hosting Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. Friday and Winona State at 4 p.m. Saturday. It would have been nice if the USF and USD matches could have been spaced a little further apart.
JCC graduate Alicia Brandt is a 6-foot middle blocker at Waldorf, which is 7-0 after winning four matches at a tournament hosted by William Penn.
Brandt played in two of those matches, posting three kills vs. Hannibal-LaGrange and three more vs. Iowa Wesleyan.
The Warriors go to a tournament hosted by Iowa Wesleyan next weekend.
Sticking with volleyball, but moving on to some local graduates who are coaching on the college level.
Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield graduate Lindsey Wilber is the head coach at Dakota Wesleyan, which is rated No. 17 in the NAIA poll.
Last Thursday the Tigers lost for the first time this season 3-2 at No. 12 Bellevue. On Friday, DWU beat No. 14 Montana Tech 3-0 and Benedictine 3-0.
Wesleyan (7-1) is at No. 23 Dordt Wednesday and hosts Briar Cliff Friday. JCC graduate Georgianna Wenzel is a freshman right side hitter for the Chargers.
Jackson County Central graduate Lacey (Wacker) Reitz is an assistant coach at Northwestern College.
The Red Raiders are ranked eighth in NAIA and have a 9-1 record, with the loss coming to No. 7 Corban (Ore.).
Tonight (Tuesday), Northwestern is in North Dakota for a match at No. 6 University of Jamestown.
Back to the cousin theme as Lacey will have a cousin playing for the other team tonight in Tenley Buddenhagen, a 5-4 sophomore setter from Huron.
Martin County West graduate Alyssa Taylor is Associate Head Coach at Gustavus. The Gusties moved up two places to No. 17 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III ratings.
Gustavus started its season by going 3-0 at a tournament at Ithaca, N.Y. with wins over Geneseo, Swarthmore and Ithaca.
The Gusties play their first 16 matches away from home. Their first match at home is Sept. 30 vs. Carleton.
Cross country
Two area graduates competed in the Augustana Twilight Meet Friday at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls.
Jackson County Central graduate Olivia Anderson, a freshman at Minnesota State University, ran in her first collegiate race and placed 184th out of 313 runners with a 5K time of 21:26.17.
Fairmont grad Hannah Neusch, a sophomore at South Dakota State, was 131st in 20:35.35.
Division I schools took the top two places in the team standings as SDSU was first with 84 points and Nebraska second with 97. Minnesota State was third with 98 points.
Cheerleading
Jackson County Central graduate Haley Tvinnereim (left in the above photo) has been named a captain for the South Dakota State cheerleading team.
Haley is a junior at SDSU. She was also a captain last year.
The cheer team at SDSU raises its own funds.
