Rudy Rudy Rudy
Jackson County Central graduate Rudy Voss took to Twitter tonight (Monday) to announce that he is retiring from college football.
Here are the tweets:
Voss has been a quarterback at South Dakota State for three seasons.
This past season, he saw playing time in a Week 1 loss to Iowa at Kinnick Stadium and in Week 3 (a 45-17 home win over Butler.) He ran for a touchdown in the win over the Bulldogs.
His back then kept him out of game action until SDSU’s 39-18 semifinal win over Montana State in Brookings where he was 1-for-2 passing for three yards.
Also, a county statute established in 2020 requires playing this clip of Rudy after JCC lost to Pierz in the state Class 3A football playoffs occasionally. (There’s not really a statute but everyone should watch this every now and then).
Men’s wrestling
Jackson County Central graduate Kie Anderson, a freshman at Concordia College, won the 125-pound title in the Silver Division at the North Country Open hosted by St. John's University Saturday.
Anderson went 2-0, pinning Teagyn Ludwig of St. John's in his first match and then winning an 8-0 major decision over Clayson Mele of Minnesota State Moorhead in the finals.
And here’s some video Concordia tweeted out. Kie’s dad, Ron, is in the background. And that’s gotta be Brad Freking as well. Didn’t notice him the first time.
Kie is 5-4 on the season and has won five of his last seven matches.
JCC grad Payton Handevidt, a freshman at Augustana University, placed third at 157 pounds at the Worthington Open on Saturday.
Wrestling unattached, Handevidt had a first-round bye before winning a 6-1 decision over Cael Larson of Northern State.
He then lost a 6-2 decision to Antrell Taylor of Nebraska and won the third-place match by injury default over another Cornhusker, Josh Licking.
Meanwhile, some more area graduates were wrestling for Augustana in a pair of road duals. The 14th-ranked Vikings lost 25-14 to No. 7 Wisconsin-Parkside Friday and 30-11 to No. 10 Upper Iowa Saturday.
Two Martin County West grads went 2-0 for the Vikings.
Eighth-ranked Jaxson Rohman won a 7-4 decision over fifth-ranked Shane Corrigan of Parkside and then won by technical fall at Upper Iowa. Unranked Connor Simmonds defeated No. 6 Jalen Spuhler of Parkside and then won by fall at Upper Iowa.
Another MCW graduate, Miles Fitzgerald, was 0-2 on the trip at 157 pounds.
Also, Windom grad Kade Sammons was 0-2 at 141 and Jackson County Central graduate Jacob Tvinnereim was 0-1 at 184.
Augustana will host Dakota Wesleyan Friday and is at Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday.
Swimming and diving
Jackson County Central graduate Hailey Handevidt was honored along with the rest of the seniors on the Augustana University women’s swimming and diving team on Thursday.
Handevidt had a time of 26.89 seconds in the 50 free in that night’s dual vs. the University of Sioux Falls.
The Vikings defeated the Cougars 210-78 to improve to 11-0. Augustana’s next meet is the Coyote Invitational in Sioux Falls on Feb. 3-4.
Men’s basketball
JCC grad Pat Garvin is the head coach of the Bethany Lutheran College men’s basketball team, which won two games last weekend and continues to lead the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Vikings were 93-86 winners over Minnesota-Morris Friday and defeated Crown College 110-105 on Saturday. BLC is now 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the UMAC.
Bethany is fourth in the country among NCAA Division III teams in scoring, averaging 95.0 points per game. Next up for the Vikings is a game in New Ulm Saturday vs. Martin Luther College.
Women’s basketball
Martin County West graduate Alyssa Williamson is a 5-foot-6 senior guard at Hamline University.
Williamson had seven points and two rebounds for the Pipers in a 65-37 win over Carleton on Wednesday and then posted seven points, four rebounds and three steals in a 60-55 loss at St. Olaf Saturday.
The Pipers are 11-5 overall and 8-5 in the MIAC. Hamline has two home games this week, hosting Macalaster Wednesday and St. Catherine Saturday.
Indoor track and field
Fairmont graduate Conner Tordsen, a senior at Dakota State, set a school record in the weight throw at the South Dakota State D2 Invitational Friday in Brookings.
Tordsen had an effort of 63- 6 ¼ to place second in the event. He broke his own school record of 59-8 ½.
Tordsen has the second-best NAIA performance in that event this season. He also placed second in the shot put Friday with an effort of 49-8 8 ¼.
Fairmont graduate Wyatt Quiring, a senior at Gustavus, won the 400 meters and set a meet record at the Macalester Vanessa Seljeskog Classic on Satuday
Quiring was first in the 400 in a time of 50.57 seconds. He was part of the Gustavus team that set a meet record in that event with a time of 1:31.54 in 2021.
Another Fairmont grad, Alli Lardy, a senior at the University of North Dakota, placed fifth in two events at the Jim Emmerich Invitational in Brookings on Saturday.
Lardy was fifth in the weight throw (58-6 ½) and also fifth in the shot put (44-9).
Carsen Musser of Sherburn, a member of the U.S. National Under-18 men’s hockey team, is high on the list of eligible players on the National Hockey League Central Scouting's Midseason rankings ahead of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The draft will be held June 28-29 in Nashville.
Musser is ranked fifth on the list of North American goalies.
For the season, Musser has played in 17 games for the NTDP and has a 10-4 record. He’s played 867 minutes and 30 seconds and has a save percentage of .898 and his goals-against average has dipped back below 3.0 at 2.97.
The U18s are at NCAA Division III third-ranked Adrian College on Tuesday.
