In this delayed edition of Lots O’ Stuff, we have some college athlete updates a little more.
Track and field
Jackson County Central graduate Molly Boyum, a sophomore at Augustana University, placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at Dordt Invitational in Sioux Center with a time of 1:08.26.
Martin County West grad Cora Olson, a junior at Concordia University in Seward, Neb., had a busy day at the Central Nebraska Challenge in Kearney, Neb. She placed sixth in the 200 meters (25.69, a PR), eighth in the long jump (17-3 1/4) and ran the anchor leg of 4x100-meter relay finished fourth (48.42).
One Martin County West and two Fairmont grads competed in the USD Earlybird in Vermillion.
MCW graduate Jake Lewis, a freshman at Iowa Central Community College, had a time of 2:17.92 in the 800 meters.
Fairmont grad Conner Tordsen, a senior at Dakota State, had the second-best hammer throw in school history with an effort of 174-7 to place eighth. He also finished ninth in the discus throw (155-8).
Last week, Tordsen was named the first Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week by the North Star Athletic Association after setting a school record in the discus (171-11) at the Wayne State Wildcat Open.

Another Fairmont graduate, Andrew Moeller, a freshman at South Dakota State, had a time of 53.6 seconds in the 400 meters.
Two Fairmont graduates placed high in events at the Hamline University Invitational.
Wyatt Quiring, a senior with the Gustavus men’s team, placed third in the 400 meters (50.94) and anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth (3:34.0).
Iliana Ramon is a senior with the Gusties’ women’s squad, was sixth in the 5k (18:31.31).
Baseball
JCC grad Gavin Jacobsen, a freshman at Bethany Lutheran College, took the loss for the Vikings at home Saturday vs. Minnesota-Morris.
For the season, he’s pitched 14 2/3 innings, allowing 17 runs (16 earned), walked 16, hit four and struck out 17.
Jackson County Central graduate Alex Bretzman recorded a save and a win for the USD Club baseball team in a tripleheader vs. Northern Iowa in Salem, S.D.
He picked up a save in the second game, pitching one inning and striking out one.
Bretzman then started the third game and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits, walking eight and striking out five.
Truman native Derek Shoen, a senior at the University of Mary, set a pair of school NCAA era records last week in Sioux Falls, hit three home runs and had seven runs batted in for the Marauders.
Mary then opened its home schedule at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark on Saturday. He had a hit in a 3-1 loss to Winona State in the opening game and then had three hits including his team-leading seventh home run of the season, two RBI and walked once in a 7-4 loss.
Fairmont graduate Jack Hested is a sophomore with the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team. He pitched the final three innings of the Lakers’ 18-8 win over Southwestern CC Saturday, giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits, walking one and striking out four.
On the season, he’s pitched six innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits, walking and fanning five.
Also, former Jackson Bull Briar Rowley, a sophomore, has pitched in three games for ILCC.
Gopher volleyball
Matt Prunty of Welcome and Steve Chapin are familiar faces on the volleyball scene in the region.
Both were coaches before becoming involved in officiating.
On Saturday, they officiated a scrimmage between the University of Minnesota and University of South Dakota in Blue Earth.
Hedquist, Bulldogs up 2-0
Heron Lake native Hobie Hedquist was the winning goaltender Saturday as the Alberni Valley Bulldogs topped the Cowichan Valley Capitals 3-1 in Game 2 of their best-of-seven Coastal Conference Quarterfinal series.
Hedquist made 11 saves in the contest. He’d made 21 saves in Game 1, a 5-3 Alberni Valley win.
The Bulldogs lead the series 2-0
Games 3 and 4 are in Duncan, B.C. Tuesday and Wednesday.
