Several area graduates were in Brookings this weekend for the Indoor Classic track and field meet at Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
Jackson County Central graduate Jessica Christoffer, a junior at South Dakota State, finished in eighth place in the mile run with a time of 5:00.74.
Fairmont grad Andrew Moeller, a sophomore at SDSU, was fifth in the 800 meters with a career-best time of 1:54.14.
Wyatt Quiring is a Fairmont graduate who is a junior at Gustavus. He was seventh in the 400 meters in 49.67 seconds and 26th out of 98 entries in the 200 meters in 22.61.
Another Fairmont grad, Allison Lardy, is a senior at North Dakota. She was third in the weight throw with a distance of 59-5 ¾. That’s the sixth-best throw in UND program history. Lardy was also eighth in the shot put with a mark of 44-3 ½.
Also, Martin County West graduate Jake Lewis, a freshman at Iowa Central, was 70th of 84 runners in the mile with a clocking of 4:48.82.
Another MCW grad, Cora Olson, is a junior at Concordia University in Nebraska. The Bulldogs hosted an indoor meet Saturday in Seward, Neb. Olson was fifth in triple jump (34-7), seventh in the 200 meters (26.71) and eighth in the long jump (16-10 ¾).
Jackson County Central graduate Hailey Handevidt, a junior with the Augustana women’s swimming and diving team, had a PR time of 26.21 seconds in the 50 freestyle at the NSIC Championships in Sioux Falls. The Vikings finished third in team standings, their highest finish ever.
Martin County West grad Alyssa Williamson is a junior with the Hamline women’s basketball team. She scored five points in each game this week as the Pipers picked up wins over St. Benedict and St. Catherine sandwiched around a loss to Carleton. Hamline, 17-5 overall and 15-4 in the MIAC, hosts Gustavus Monday and plays at Macalaster Wednesday before the conference tourney opens Saturday.
More records this week for Hanna Geistfeld of Truman, a senior with the Bethany Lutheran College women’s basketball team.
On Friday she had a game-high 36 points and 13 rebounds, and also posted dished out five assists in a 95-78 home win over Crown College. Hanna became the school’s all-time leading rebounder during the game.
Saturday was Senior Day at BLC Geistfeld had her 17th double double of the season with a game-high 33 points and 21 rebounds in a 75-63 win over Minnesota-Morris. It was her fourth straight 30-point performance and she broke her own single-season field goal record with her 221st midway through the second quarter. She had 217 field goals in the 2019-20 season.
The Vikings are 17-6 overall and 12-0 in the UMAC. They finish the regular season on the road next weekend, playing at Northwestern Friday at 5 p.m.
Two MCW graduates were in the Augustana men’s wrestling lineup Saturday, with each losing to the third-ranked wrestler in the country at their weight class.
Freshman Jaxson Rohman, who is rated fifth at 125 pounds, lost 10-7 to No. 3 Joe Arroyo of Wisconsin-Parkside while redshirt freshman Miles Fitzgerald lost a major decision to Shane Gantz. No. 10 Augustana did win the dual 21-19 over No. 8 Parkside. The Vikings host No. 2 St. Cloud State Thursday.
JCC graduate Ben Caven, the head wrestling coach at West Lyon High School, will have three wrestlers in the state Class 2A tournament in Des Moines that starts Thursday. Wildcat qualifiers are Breg Blauwet (36-11) at 126 pounds, Gabe Terwee (40-5) at 195 and Easton Fleshman (43-1) at 285.
Hobie Hedquist of Heron Lake split a pair of starts for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the British Columbia Juinior Hockey League this week. He made 17 saves in a loss to the Cowichan Valley Capitals and then had 20 stops on 22 shots in a 6-2 win over the Coquitlan Express.
Hedquist is tied for the BCHL lead in shutouts (4), sixth in wins (17), sixth in goals against (2.51) and 11th in save percentage (.912). The Bulldogs are tied for second in the league’s Coastal Division, three points behind the first place Langley Rivermen.
