Caven moving on
Jackson County Central graduate Ben Caven has resigned as head wrestling coach at West Lyon High School. He began coaching the Wildcats as a student teacher in 2007. He’s been a 7-12 P.E. teacher since 2008 and was also the district’s driver’s education teacher.
Caven has accepted a teaching position and will be a junior high wrestling coach at Pierre, S.D.
He was a two-time state individual qualifier with the Huskies, placing third at 152 pounds in Class AA in 2001 and also qualified at 145 in AA in 2000.
Caven was on JCC’s state Class AA championship teams in 1999 and 2000.
Ben and his wife Katie have three children, Sydney, Jax, and Lakelyn.
Bosch departs Gators
Mike Bosch, who coached Jackson High School to the state tournament in 1993, has left the University of Florida coaching staff. He had been the pitching coach for the Gators.
Florida head coach Tim Walton announced that Bosch would not continue as the pitching coach next season.
In a press release, Walton said, “At the conclusion of the season, Mike and I sat down and discussed the year and his career here as our pitching coach. We decided that moving in a different direction was best for the program.”
Walton had nothing but praise for Bosch.
“Mike is the hardest working person I have ever been around,” he said. “His objective teaching style and game planning are at the top of the industry. This was an extremely difficult decision for us to make. Mike is a tremendous man and cares deeply for his athletes and the Gator softball program. I wish him, his wife Ellen and his family the absolute best.”
Bosch was grateful for his time with the program and said in the release it was “an amazing professional and personal experience.”
He had been with Florida since 2018.
Bosch began his coaching career at Wabasso High School, coaching the Rabbits to two state tourney appearances and was named Region 3A Coach of the Year twice.
The 1993 Jackson Blue Jays placed fourth in the state Class A tournament and Bosch received his third Region 3A Coach of the Year award in as many seasons. He coached Jackson in 1994 as well and resigned prior to the 1995 season.
He was also head boys basketball coach at JHS.
Bosch coached at Iowa Lakes Community College and was an assistant coach and later the head coach at Syracuse before taking the position with the Gators.
