In this edition of Lots O’ Stuff, we look at this fall’s Jackson County Central football schedule, Andrew Boyum receiving an academic honor, Fairmont’s Conner Tordsen has completed his collegiate career, the sons of an HLOL grad did well at the South Dakota state boys golf tournament and a double feature in our Something Completely Different section.
JCC football schedule
While summer is just getting started, the fall season will be here before you know it.
Jackson County Central’s football schedule is going to have a little different look than recent years.
Five teams remain the same from the past few years as the Huskies will continue to play Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, Blue Earth Area, Redwood Valley, Luverne and Pipestone.
Returning to the schedule will be Worthington.
JCC or Jackson High School played Worthington every year from 1928 until 2013 when the Trojans came off the schedule.
Worthington returned to the regular-season schedule in the 2019 season when the Huskies won 76-6 with Rudy Voss throwing a school-record seven touchdown passes, all in the first half.
The Trojans were on the schedule again in 2020 but Covid reduced the regular-season schedule to six games and the Worthington game didn’t make the cut. Jackson County Central did win a section playoff game over the Trojans that year 28-6 at Swearingen Field.
When JCC plays at Worthington on Sept. 8 it will be the first time the Huskies have made that trip since a 44-23 win to close out the 2013 season.
Two schools are new to the football schedule.
Jackson County Central has never played LeSueur-Henderson during the regular season. That changes Sept. 22 when the Giants host the Huskies.
JCC and LSH have met in section playoffs four times with the last being a 22-16 Giants’ win in 2002 after the Huskies had won in 1998, 1999 and 2001.
Also on the schedule is Minnesota Valley Lutheran. The Huskies and Chargers will meet in football for the first time ever on Oct. 6 at Johnson Field in New Ulm.
Absent from the football schedule is the “Battle for the Paddle” as Windom will not be on the regular season schedule the next two years.
The Eagles will play predominantly a Class A schedule during the regular season but remain in Section 3AA for the postseason so the teams could meet in the section playoffs.
JCC has won 18 straight over Windom dating back to 2009. The last time the Eagles beat the Huskies was in the Section 3AA quarterfinals in 2008.
We’ll look at the JCC cross country and volleyball schedules in future episodes of Lots O’Stuff.

Academic all-region
Jackson County Central graduate Andrew Boyum, a freshman with the Iowa Central Community College men’s cross country team, has earned Academic All-Region 11 honors from the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference for the spring semester.
Every sport is recognized each semester.
First-team performers received a 3.5 grade-point average or above.
Tordsen finishes DSU career
Conner Tordsen completed his two-sport career at Dakota State University by competing in three events at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marion, Ind.
He became the first ever NAIA Outdoor discus throw national champion in DSU program history. Tordsen’s winning toss came on his very first attempt with a personal national meet best 177 feet, 7 inches.
Tordsen finished fourth in the hammer throw with a personal national meet best toss of 196-8 as he became the first Trojan to earn back-to-back All-America hammer throw honors.
In the shot put, Tordsen had an effort of 51-5 on his first try and fouled on the next two attempts and finished in 17th place.
He finished his career as a four-time NAIA All-American at DSU, with three coming from the outdoor season.
Tordsen earned 13 all-North Star Athletic Association Track & Field All-Conference honors at Dakota State and he was also a two-time NSAA football all-conference second-team selection.
South Dakota golf
The sons of a Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield graduate were members of the Hanson boys golf team that placed second in the South Dakota state Class B tournament at Prairie Winds Golf Club in Watertown.
Ben Wilber and AJ Wilber are the sons of Lindsay (Voss) and Matt Wilber. They’re sophomores.
Lindsay is the volleyball coach at Dakota Wesleyan University and Matt is the men’s basketball coach. One set of proud grandparents are Tub and Amy Voss of Jackson.
Ben placed fifth and earned all-tournament honors with a 36-hole total of 161 (82-79). AJ was 15th with a 165 (81-84).
Their Hanson Beavers placed second with a 503 total. The Gregory Gorillas were first with 474. South Dakota Class B golf only counts three scores in the team total.
In recognition of the recent death of Tina Turner, a double feature.
First, in 1975 someone apparently thought “you know who would fill out a great trio with Cher and Tina Turner to sing a medley of Beatles songs? Kate Smith.” Tim Conway always appears.
Also in 1975, somebody had a much better idea as they teamed Tina with Ann-Margret.
