Jackson County Central wrestling coach Nate Hanson has been named State Head Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.
Hanson had been named the Class 1A Coach of the Year at the state tournament in March.
Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran co-coaches Kurt Becker and Bill McDonald had received the Class 2A award and Josh Joriman of St. Michael-Albertville was named the Class 3A Coach of the Year.
On Saturday in Benson, Hanson was named State Head Coach of the Year.
Selected as State Assistant Coach of the Year was Mike Pettit of Waconia.
Hanson and Pettit, and Mr. Minnesota Wrestler selection Bennett Berge of Kasson-Mantorville will represent Minnesota as The National Wrestling Coaches Association’s State (NWCA) award winners that qualifies them for further NWCA honors at the regional and national levels.
Also, eight new members were inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Dave Bartelma Hall of Fame. They are Steve Carlson, Neil Jennissen, Dan Lefebvre, Tony Nelson, Jim Repke, Ron Sanders, Zach Sanders, and Kevin Steinhaus.
Gavin Jacobsen
JCC graduate Gavin Jacobsen, a freshman at Bethany Lutheran College, was the winning pitcher in an 11-0 win for the Vikings at North Central. He went 5.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking four and striking out eight.
Gavin has a 3-2 record on the season with a 6.26 earned run average. In eight appearances (seven starts) he has pitched 27.1 innings, giving up 25 runs (19 earned) on 37 hits, walking 26 and striking out 31.
BLC has an overall record of 19-13 and was 15-6 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference to earn the third seed for the conference tournament that starts Thursday. The Vikings will face second-seeded Crown College in the opening round of the four-team double-elimination tournament.
University of Northwestern in St. Paul is seeded first and will host the entire tournament.
Derek Shoen
Truman native Derek Shoen, a junior at the University of Mary, is a first-team choice on the all- Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team for the second time in as many seasons with the Marauders.
He’s hitting .329 with 12 doubles, 14 home runs, 48 runs scored runs and 51 runs batted in.
Shoen has set U-Mary single-season records for home runs and RBI. He has 25 career home runs to rank third on the career list for the Marauders in just his second season at the school after transferring from Iowa Western. The career leader has 39 homers, with second place being 27.
In addition to his offensive prowess, Shoen has taken a late inning relief role. After starting in seven of his eight appearances on the mound last year, Shoen has pitched seven times in relief and earned two saves.
Mary is 24-25 on the season, 16-18 in the NSIC.
The Marauders are seeded eighth for the conference tournament that starts Wednesday in Sioux Falls and Brandon. Mary plays top-seeded Augustana at noon Wednesday at Ronken Field.
Jack Hested
Fairmont grad Jack Hested has completed his baseball career at Iowa Lakes Community College.
In his sophomore season with the Lakers, Hested pitched 25 innings, allowing 31 runs (26 earned) on 32 hits, walking five and striking out 14.
ILCC had a 12-37 record, 6-27 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.
Aba Turner
Jackson County Central graduate Aba Turner, a junior at North Dakota State, has played in 11 games for the Bison this season.
She has scored six runs for NDSU, which is 28-21 overall, 10-8 in The Summit League.
North Dakota State is seeded third for the six-team double-elimination conference tournament in Brookings.
The Bison play sixth-seeded North Dakota at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
USD Twilight
Fairmont grad Conner Tordsen, a senior with the Dakota State men’s track and field team, continues to produce NAIA 'A' automatic qualifying marks in both the discus and hammer.
Tordsen hit a career best 172-1 to earn a runner-up honor in the discus at the USD Twilight meet in Vermillion. That breaks his own school record that was set in the season opener in March at Wayne, Neb.
He was sixth in the hammer throw with an effort of 191-8 and had DSU’s best performance in the shot put at 45-6 ½.

Two other Fairmont grads were in Vermillion, competing for South Dakota State.
Freshman Andrew Moeller placed seventh out of 34 runners in the men’s 800 meters (1:54.86) and Hannah Neusch, also a freshman, was 36th of 43 entries in the 1500 meters (5:26.52).
Cora Olson
Martin County West graduate Cora Olson, a junior at Concordia University in Seward, Neb., competed in four events at the Great Plains Athletic Conference meet in Crete, Neb.
She was second in the triple jump (36-4 ¾), 10th in the long jump (17-1 ¼), sixth in the 100 meters (12.54) and sixth in the 200 meters (25.81).
Concordia won its seventh straight GPAC team title.
Sabrina Segar
Fairmont grad Sabrina Segar, a freshman at Minnesota-Duluth, competed in two events at the Deb Schulz Open in Mankato.
She was 14th in the shot put (34-8 ½) and 21st in the javelin (69-9).
Jake Lewis
MCW grad Jake Lewis, a freshman at Iowa Central Community College, competed in two events at the NJCAA Region XI meet in Council Bluffs.
Lewis was 11th of 19 entries in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:24.84 and 28th of 37 runners in the 800 meters in 2:10.27.
Luke Becker
Fairmont graduate Luke Becker is playing with the Wild Health Genomes of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The team is based in Lexington, Kentucky.
He has a batting average of 2.77 (13-47) and has an on-base percentage of .321. Becker has one double, two home runs, has walked four times, scored nine runs and six RBI.

Rangers down 3-1
New York Rangers’ defenseman K'Andre Miller, in his second season in the NHL, is in the playoffs for the first time.
The Rangers are trailing three games to one in the Eastern Conference first round series with Pittsburgh after the Penguins won 7-2 on their home ice Monday night.
Miller is the son of 1988 Fairmont High School graduate Amy Sokoloski,
He is second in shifts played among all players in the postseason with 143 and sixth in minutes per game at 27:23.
Miller played 59 shifts and had 44:28 of ice team in Game One of the series, which the Penguins won 4-3 in triple overtime. He also had two assists in that game.
In the series Miller has also recorded 11 hits, has nine takeaways, five blocked shots and has a plus-minus of +1.
Game Five in the series is Wednesday in New York.
