Martin County West opened its cross country season Friday at the Beresford, S.D. Invitational at Bridges Golf Course. The Mavericks and Luverne were the lone Minnesota teams in a large group of South Dakota squads.
MCW did not have a complete varsity team in either meet.
Katie Hartke led the Mavericks in the girls race as she finished 27th in a field of 79 runners with a 5K time of 21:38.18. The individual champion was Luverne’s Jenna DeBates in 18:27.02.
In the boys race, Grant Koehnen was the top finisher for Martin County West as he was 17th of 99 runners in 17:31.19. Owen Janiszeski of Luverne was the boys champion in 15:54.30.
Sioux Falls Christian won the team title for both the girls and boys.
MCW will return to South Dakota for its next meet as well as the Mavericks compete in the Augutana Twilight meet on Friday, Sept. 1.
