Federated Rural Electric of Jackson has announced the winners in its 2023 Youth Tour Contest.
Katie Hartke of Sherburn, a junior at Martin County West High School, won the grand prize of Federated’s free trip to Washington, D.C. June 13-18. Hartke is the daughter of Doug and Lisa.
She will be among 1,500 teenagers from across the country participating in Youth Tour, which is sponsored by electric cooperatives. She will tour the D.C. memorials and sites, witness Congress in session, visit with legislators and enjoy a theater performance, while learning about cooperatives.
Second place and $150 was awarded to Gabriel Wolff, a senior at Jackson County Central High School. He is the son of Adam and Angela of Jackson.
Third place and $100 went to Joseph Mohr, also a Jackson County Central senior. He is the son of Mark and Carrie of Jackson.
Each applicant completed an application and an essay on an energy-related topic. Each applicant also received a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com. The five finalists were called back for personal interviews March 20.
The other finalists were Megan Wheeler, Fairmont, and Isaac Stone, Fairmont, who are both freshmen at Fairmont Area Schools. Wheeler is the daughter of Elizbeth. Stone is the son of Christy Stone and Steve Stone.
"Federated is proud to sponsor this contest," said General Manager Scott Reimer. "It's an investment in our youth and future. This trip gives local teens exposure to our industry and government in action. These are our future leaders and I’m happy to report that we are in good hands."
