Jackson County Central will be in a field of 14 teams competing in the Paul Metcalf Invitational cross country meet Friday at Mountain Lake Golf Course.
The meet is named after longtime cross country and track and field coach Paul Metcalf, a Jackson High School graduate. He was inducted into the Minnesota Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
Metcalf started the cross country program at Mountain Lake High School in 1972 and the first Laker Invitational that year. The meet was known as the Wolverine Invitational after a cooperative pairing with Butterfield-Odin began and continued after the pairing was dissolved. It became the Paul Metcalf Invitational in 2017.
It will be the second meet of the season for JCC, which opened its season last Friday at the Fairmont Earlybird Invitational. A scheduled meet at Marshall Monday was canceled due to the heat.
After running a shortened 4000-meter event at Fairmont, varsity runners will use the customary 5000-meter distance on Friday.
There is one state-ranked team and one ranked runner scheduled to compete. Host Mountain Lake Area/Red Rock Central/Comfrey’s boys are ranked eighth in Class A and Fairmont’s Macy Hanson is second in the Class AA individual girls ratings.
JCC’s next scheduled meet is the Gerry Smith Invitational hosted by Tri-City United in Montgomery on Thursday, Sep 5.
