Both Jackson County Central wrestlers who participated in the second Minnesota's #1 wrestling event at The Shop in Minnetonka Saturday lost decisions. The plan was to hold the event outdoors, but it had to be moved indoors because of the weather.
Returning state high school champions in all three classes are invited to wrestle.
Nolan Ambrose wrestled in the first of the 15 matches, losing 10-5 to Jack Nelson of Mound Westonka.
Ambrose, a sophomore at JCC, was the Class 1A 106-pound state champion last year, compiling a 40-2 record. Nelson, also a sophomore, was the Class 3A 106-pound champion.
Nelson was first in The Guillotine's pound-for-pound rankings for the sophomore class, with Ambrose ninth.
Payton Handevidt later would lose 5-3 in sudden-victory overtime to Owatonna's Landen Johnson. Both are seniors.
Handevidt is a two-time state champion in Class 1A, winning at 145 in 2020 and 152 last year. Johnson was the Class 3A 160-pound champion this past spring. In the pound-for-pound rankings for seniors, Johnson was eighth and Handevidt ninth.
Handevidt also wrestled in the first Minnesota's #1 event last year, losing to Cael Swensen of Wayzata, who won the Class 3A 152-pound title last spring and will wrestle at South Dakota State. Handevidt has committed to wrestle at Augustana University.
