It was a day of mixed results for Jackson baseball teams Thursday.
The Jackson American Legion baseball team opened the Division II American Legion Southwest Substate tournament with a 3-1 win over RTR, while the Jackson Bulls amateur team dropped an 11-1 game to Hadley.
Post 130 scored two in the first inning on the way to its win as Bryson Powers RBI double scored Gabe Wolff, who had walked; and Ben Spaeth’s single scored Powers.
Jackson’s other run came in the third as Wolff walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Wolff walked three times for Jackson. Spaeth had two hits and walked. Logan Butzon also had a hit for Post 130.
Brett Rossow went the distance to record the pitching win, allowing one run on five hits, not walking a batter and striking out four.
Jackson will play the winner of Thursday’s final first-round game between St. James and Windom at 8 p.m. Friday in St. James.
In the first two games of the day Thursday, Luverne shut out Wells 7-0 and Sleepy Eye beat Minnesota Lake 14-3.
What kind of night was it for the Bulls at Wacker Field?
They had an inning where they sent five hitters to the plate and they produced four hits and a walk and didn’t score. And they later had an inning where their pitcher struck out four batters.
Carter Snyder walked with the bases loaded in the second inning to bring in Trace Michelson with Jackson’s lone run of the game.
The Bulls will host the Milroy Yankees at 4 p.m. Sunday to close out regular season.
Jackson is locked into the third seed from the First Nite League for the league playoffs and will host either Ruthton or Pipestone in Game 1 of a best-of-three series next Wednesday.
More later.
