Third-seeded Martin County West fell behind early but came on to win 14-2 in five innings over 14th-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran in the single elimination first round of the Section 2AA softball tournament Wednesday at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex in Welcome. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday due to the weather.
The Mavericks, 18-3, are now scheduled to play at home again at 5 p.m. Friday to start the double elimination portion of the tournament.
MCW will host the winner of Thursday’s game between sixth-seeded Nicollet (12-6) and 11th-seeded Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove (4-16). The Raiders and Falcons were postponed for a second straight day on Wednesday.
The tournament then continues Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
The visiting Chargers scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning of Wednesday’s game. The Mavericks pulled even with a two-run second inning and then scored seven runs in the third and five in the fourth.
Rowan Faber had two hits and five runs batted in for MCW. She had a pair of two-run doubles and drove in another run with a groundout.
Emily Schettler had two hits and two RBI; Bailey Larson had two hits and one RBI; and Lillie Schultz also had two hits. Maddie Carlson and Courtney Anderson each had one hit.
Carlson pitched the first four innings to get the win. She allowed two runs on two hits, walked two and struck out four.
Sydney Clow pitched a scoreless fifth inning, giving up one hit.
