Martin County West graduate Katie Lange won four matches over two days to win the 143-pound title at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday at Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids.
A sophomore at Augsburg University, Lange was rated third nationally entering the tournament.
She staged a remarkable comeback in the final seconds of her national title match with top-ranked Ashlynn Ortega of King (Tenn.).
Trailing 6-4, Lange scored four points in the final 32 seconds, including a takedown with 11 seconds left, to claim the win and her first national title.
Lange is now 2-1 in her collegiate career against Ortega, after the two split their meetings last season. Both of Lange's wins came when Ortega was ranked No. 1 nationally.
In the semifinals earlier Saturday, advanced to the title match with a 10-4 win over No. 2 Grace Stem of Lock Haven (Pa.).
On Friday Katie opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Zoe Gress of East Stroudsburg (Pa.), before claiming a pin in 2:21 pin over sixth-ranked Clarissa Agostini of Adrian (Mich.).
Lange finished her season with a 33-6 record for the Auggies, who were fifth in the team standings at the national tourney. She recorded nine pins and 16 technical falls.
In two seasons at Augsburg Lange has a 51-7 record with 16 pins and 23 technical falls.
