Brett Benson, formerly of Jackson and now from Bird Island, placed 17th in an original field of 384 golfers at the 100th Northwest Amateur Golf Tournament that concluded Sunday at Spencer Golf and Country Club.
Benson had rounds of 70, 71, 71 and 72 for a 72-hole total of four-under 284.
J.D. Anderson of Johnston, Iowa, set a tournament record in winning the event. He had rounds of 62, 65, 71 and 68 for a 22-under total of 266.
Ben Wollam of Marshalltown held the previous tournament record, winning the 2014 event with a 268 total.
Brett Benson’s brother, Scott, won the tournament in 2012 with a 271 total.
Jerrod Hansen of Lakefield finished in third place in the Fourth Flight (73-78-74 – 225). Two golfers came in at 224.
Also, Connor Anderson of Armstrong, formerly of Welcome placed 11th in the Fourth Flight (76-75-78 – 229).
Hunter Schmidt of Dunnell finished fourth in the Sixth Flight (73-80-78 – 235).
Don Wachal of Jackson (89-103 – 192) placed 64th of 78 golfers in the Senior 2 (Ages 60+) Division.
