Members of the Martin County West trap shooting team are entered in a national competition that starts Tuesday and runs through next Sunday.
Five MCW shooters will compete in the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship at the Michigan Trapshooting Association in Mason, Mich.
There are two practice days, followed by two days of qualifying rounds for teams and individuals. The event concludes Sunday with the final rounds crowning the top five teams and the top 10 men and women shooters.
The MCW athletes practiced and competed for eight weeks in Truman and submitted scores for six of those weeks. Those scores determined both conference and state placement.
Qualifying as Tier 1 with a season average of 23 out of 25 were Teya Schmidtke, Kayden Glidden and Riley Ebeling.
Qualifying as Tier 2 with a season average of 21 out of 25 were Richard McMains and Braydon Dougherty. They’ll all compete as individuals and as a team this week.
The Maverick trap shooting team placed second in Class 2 Conference.
Schmidtke placed first and Glidden second for the girls and Ebeling was third for the boys.
Schmidtke tied for third place overall statewide.
Approximately 3,000 student-athletes will compete in the national event.
