It was a classic pitcher's duel featuring a pair of pitchers who will be going on to pitch at the collegiate level as the final two undefeated teams matchup up in the Sub-District B American Legion baseball tournament Saturday night at Riverside Park in Springfield.
When it was all over Springfield's Mason Leonard came out on top of Jackson's Gavin Jacobsen as Springfield won the game 3-1 to earn the sub-district's number one seed for next week's district tournament.
Jackson will play again Sunday. Windom plays Wabasso at 11 a.m., with Post 130 getting the winner of that game at about 1 p.m.
There were a total of 28 strikeouts in Saturday’s game.
Springfield's Leonard, who is headed to the University of Sioux Falls, allowed five hits and struck out 12. Jacobsen, who will be attending Bethany Lutheran College, allowed only two hits and struck out 16.
Jacobsen also had two of Jackson's hits.
Payton Handevidt also had two hits for Post 130 and scored Jackson's only run in the fourth inning when he doubled, stole third and scored on a double steal as the throw went to second base in an attempt to get Trace Michelson after he had walked.
Leighton Polz had the only other hit for Jackson.
