It’s been said that records are made to broken.
However, if the Jackson County Central wrestling team can accomplish what Coach Nate Hanson would like it to at Saturday’s Section 3A individual tournament, the Huskies would set a record that can’t be broken or even tied at least in the foreseeable future.
Hanson says his team’s goal should be to qualify all 14 wrestlers for next week’s state tournament.
Should JCC reach perfection and advance all 14 of its wrestlers it would establish a mark that can’t even be equaled for at least the time being as the Minnesota State High School League recently decided to reduce the number of weight classes to 13 starting next season.
“Getting 13 of 14 to state is going to be hard to top, but why not?” said Hanson after his Huskies won the team title last Saturday in Lamberton. “We’ll have to wrestle hard and let the results take care of themselves. Anything is possible.”
Only three of those 13 qualifiers (Kie Anderson, Payton Handevidt and William Freking) graduated.
Another state qualifier from last year (Landon Andrews) wasn’t able to make it into the Huskies’ incredibly deep lineup for the individual tournament. He did win a match at the section team tournament last week and could be called on again depending on matchups at the state tourney.
The top two place winners at each weight advance to the state tourney March 3-4 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson County Central High School gym.
There were 16 wrestlers from Section 3A in the final rankings by The Guillotine. Listed are name, school and state ranking.
