For the first five weeks of the season the Jackson County Central football team has been getting off to quick starts and Huskies coach Tom Schuller wanted that to continue in Week 6.
His team responded by scoring five touchdowns on 13 plays in the first quarter and added two more in the first three minutes of the second on its way to a 64-8 win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran Friday at Swearingen Field.
JCC is 6-0 with the strongest part of the schedule ahead.
The six teams the Huskies have beaten to date have a combined 12 wins. That’s only one more than the final two have as Luverne is 6-0 and Pipestone 5-1 after the Cardinals beat the Arrows 6-0 in overtime Friday.
“We’ve been really coming out strong and we did again,” Schuller said. “The first quarter was phenomenal, getting up 38-0.
“We emphasized trying to get a little more efficient in the passing game, which I thought we were. We completed some nice passes. That’s probably what I was most pleased about.”
JCC piled up an amazing 597 yards offense, 387 rushing and 210 passing. Three players threw passes for the Huskies and went a combined 10-for-14. Six different players had receptions and three of those scored TDs.
Jackson County Central limited the Chargers to 160 yards, 103 on the ground and 57 through the air.
“Our defense was stellar,” Schuller commented. “The offensive line was good. Stormy (Kasey Storm) was sick, so we plugged some other guys in there and they played well and got us back on track.”
Roman Voss was part of five of JCC’s nine touchdowns.
He threw three TD passes (34 and 5 yards to Ben Dahlin and 9 yards to Grant Freking).
He also caught a 52-yard TD pass from Evan Bartholomaus. Voss is likely going to play tight end in college (he’s had offers from eight Power Four conference schools) but has limited opportunities to be used as a receiver this season.
“He’s phenomenal doing that,” Schuller said of Voss’ skill level catching passes. “I think he’s a really high prospect in that. He can also play an edge defender. There’s a lot of places you can put Roman.”
The other TD for Voss came on a 22-yard run. Voss also ran in a two-point conversion and had a fumble recovery on defense.
JCC was 4-6 on its two-point tries and one of the misses was a kneel-down. Ben Gallagher made two of his three extra-point kicks.
“We got a chance to get everybody in and everybody played quite a bit, which is awesome,” said Schuller. “That makes the popcorn taste better at the theatre (watching the game tape). It’s great for team synergy.”
Next for the Huskies is the first of those two tough tests to close out the regular season as they travel to Luverne Thursday. The Cardinals were 6-0 overtime winners at previously undefeated Pipestone on Jayden Johnson’s run in the extra session.
“It’s a short week next week for Luverne, but I think we’re heading in the right direction,” Schuller said. “We’re trying to get that first-round bye (in the Section 3AA playoffs), which I think is a big deal. We’re well on the way to doing that. We have two tough teams left. Luverne is a tough place to play but we’ll be ready for them.”
