Victory was heartfelt Friday at Huset’s Speedway, where Carson Macedo (Lemoore, Calif.) executed a race-winning pass with three laps remaining to win the second round of the inaugural Huset’s High Bank Nationals.
Macedo capitalized on a slide job in turns one and two to pass Brian Brown (Higginsville, Mo.) for the lead on Lap 33 to garner his sixth World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory of the season. And this one was extra special.
“I think I had a co-pilot there,” he said. “Four years ago today we lost Jason Johnson. It’s pretty incredible to win on that day. He was a pretty incredible human being to start this incredible race team with such good people. It’s quite a deal. The fact that now Philip Dietz and Brooke Dietz are carrying on that legacy and putting together a first-class operation here on the World of Outlaws tour with incredible sponsors like we have is pretty special.”
Riley Goodno (Knoxville) led the first eight laps of the 35-lap main event before Brown drove around Goodno in turns three and four following a restart on Lap 9 to take the top spot. Brown maintained the lead despite facing traffic throughout the second half of the feature before Macedo entered the picture in the closing laps.
Macedo advanced into second place on Lap 27 and then tracked down Brown before making the pass with three laps remaining. He pulled away to win by 1.046 seconds and claim the $20,000 top prize.
Goodno rounded out the podium with his career-best result with the World of Outlaws. Spencer Bayston (Lebanon, Ind.) finished fourth and David Gravel (Watertown, Conn.) fifth.
Brooke Tatnell (San Souci, NSW, Australia) was 18th in the A Main in the DeWall Racing No. 16. Earlier he was fourth in his heat and sixth in his qualifying group.
Kaleb Johnson (Sioux Falls) placed 17th in the Last Chance Showdown, sixth in his heat and was 21st in qualifying. Skylar Prochaska (Lakefield) was 19th in the Showdown, fourth in his heat and 17th in qualifying.
Matt Wasmund (Jackson) finished 21st in the Showdown, seventh in his heat and 19th in his qualifying group.
Gravel is the points leader through two nights of the three-night High Bank Nationals with 852 points. Macedo and Buddy Kofoid (Penngrove, Calif.) are tied for second with 849 points, with Brock Zearfoss (Jonestown, Penn.) fourth with 846.
The top four in points are locked in for the King of the Hill. The remainder of the 49 drivers start straight up in four qualifiers.
Tatnell is 18th (765), Johnson 32nd (646), Prochaska 36th (625) and Wasmund 45th (524).
