One pod remains in quarterfinals

We’ve completed the quarterfinals in three of the four pods in Random Bracket Challenge V.

Voting in the Milton Portmann Pod concluded early this (Saturday) afternoon and we’ll start the Garland Buckeye Pod this evening.

As was the case with the Milton Portmann Pod, there was a reader who was unfamiliar with Garland Buckeye, so here you go.

Garland Buckeye was born on Oct. 16, 1897 in Heron Lake. When he was about 10, the family moved to Joliet, Ill., and he graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1916.

He made his major league debut on June 19, 1918, for the Washington Senators at the Polo Grounds against the Yankees.

On June 11, 1927, Babe Ruth hit two home runs off Garland in the same game. That gave The Bambino 20 round-trippers on his way to a then-MLB record 60 homers. After a slow start in 1928, Buckeye was released and signed with the New York Giants. He pitched one game for them, giving up six runs in 3.2 innings.

Buckeye also played pro football.

He was a center and guard from 1920-1924 and 1926. In 1920, he played four games for the Chicago Tigers of the APFA. From 1921-1924, he played for the Chicago Cardinals of the APFA and NFL. In 1926 he played for the Chicago Bulls of the first American Football League.

Garland Buckeye Pod

(1) Wheel of Fortune vs. (8) Poutine

Wheel of Fortune is an American TV game show created by Merv Griffin. The show has aired continuously since Jan. 6, 1975. Contestants solve word puzzles, like those in hangman, to win cash and prizes determined by spinning a giant carnival wheel. Pat Sajak and Vanna White hosted more than 8,000 shows together.

Poutine is a dish of French fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. It emerged in Quebec in the late 1950s in the Centre-du-Québec region. It has long been associated with Quebec cuisine, and its rise in prominence has led to its growing popularity throughout the rest of Canada.

(4) Slay vs. (5) Warrern Commission

Slay is a slang term meaning to impress strongly and favorably. Slay is used to describe basically anything cool, pretty, awesome. It's a word for anything. You can use this word for clothes, people, food, places.

The President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy, known unofficially as the Warren Commission, was established by President Lyndon B. Johnson through Executive Order 11130 on Nov. 29, 1963, to investigate the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy that had taken place in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

(2) The Abbreviation Thx vs. (7) MST3K

The abbreviation "thx" is an informal way to write "thanks" or "thank you," often used in text messages and online communication.

MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) is an American science fiction comedy TV series created by Joel Hodgson. The show premiered on KTMA-TV (now WUCW) in Minneapolis on Nov. 24, 1988. It moved to nationwide broadcast on The Comedy Channel for two seasons, then Comedy Central for five seasons until its cancellation in 1996. Thereafter, it was picked up by The Sci-Fi Channel and aired for three more seasons until another cancellation in August 1999. It had two short runs on Netflix and there were 13 additional episodes shown on the Gizmoplex, an online platform that Hodgson developed that launched in March 2022.

(3) 5 Neat Guys vs. (6) Five Guys

The 5 Neat Guys is an a capella group that consisted of every Season 4 male cast member of the SCTV series. They were noted for contrasting a clean-cut image with song lyrics that tended to be somewhat risque. Some of their biggest hits included "Step Around My Clip-on Tie," "Who Made the Egg Salad Sandwiches?", "I'm the Goof In The Classroom", "Should we Double Date with Stan and Wendy," and "I Got a Hickey."

Five Guys is an American fast food chain focused on hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries. There are more than 1,500 locations across the country.
