Worthington tops Martin County in 3AA tourney
Worthington edged Martin County 37-35 in the Section 3AA team wrestling tournament Thursday at Martin County West High School in Sherburn.
The Trojans won the first five matches of the dual for a 29-0 lead.
The Red Bulls won two in a row with a pair of ranked wrestlers bumping up a weight. 133-pound No. 6 Pierce Rohman won by tech fall at 139 and 139 No. 6 Torrey Paplow went up to 145 and won by fall to bring Martin County within 29-11.
After the Trojans won at 152 pounds, Ty Kolbe won by fall at 160 and 160-pound No. 7 Maddex Faber was a winner by fall at 172.
Aaron Becker won by fall at 189 pounds to bring the Red Bulls within 32-29 with two matches remaining.
Worthington moved 189-pound No. 7 Chase Byrne up to 215, where he won by technical fall Ivan Martin to clinch the team win for the Trojans. Martin County’s David Miller won by forfeit at 285.
The Red Bulls finish their dual season with a 13-6 record.
Worthington is 9-12 and will wrestle Marshall (26-4) in the section semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Marshall High School.
In the other semifinal, also at 12:30 p.m., New Ulm (22-5) takes on United (20-6), 12:30 p.m.
The winners will wrestle for the section title in a match scheduled for 2:30 p.m. That winner will compete in the state Class AA team tournament on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Section 3AA individual tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 in Dawson.
