Martin County had three place winners and finished in 13th place out of 36 teams at the Redwood River Riot wrestling tournament that concluded Saturday in Redwood Falls.
Marshall won the team title with 163.5 points, with Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United second with 159.5 points. The Red Bulls had 69 points.
Pierce Rohman, rated ninth at 121 pounds in Class 2A, won four matches to place first at 121.
After a first-round bye, Rohman won by technical fall 22-7 in 6:00 over Faribault’s Chase Vargo in the second round, won a 9-0 major decision over Wabasso’s Zach Skoblik in the quarterfinals and a 9-1 major decision over New Ulm’s Alex Portner in the semifinals.
In the finals, Rohman won a 7-0 decision over Class 1A 114 No. 9 Moe Erdman of Adrian/Ellsworth and remains undefeated with a 10-0 record.
Martin County’s Torrey Paplow went 6-1 in the tourney to place third at 133 pounds. He won by fall and a 3-0 decision before losing 10-7 to Vance Barz of Sauk Rapids-Rice, who is ranked first at 133 pounds in Class 2A.
Paplow won three matches by fall in the consolation bracket to set up a rematch with Barz in the third-place match and this time Paplow would win a 10-8 decision in sudden-victory overtime to put his season record at 13-1.
Paplow was one of seven wrestlers in the tournament to win four matches by fall.
Also earning a place on the podium for the Red Bulls was Maddex Faber, who finished fifth at 145.
Faber won his first two matches by decision, dropped two straight, and then won major decision in the fifth-place match. He’s 6-4.
Martin County opens its Big South Conference East Division dual schedule with a pair of road matches this week, wrestling at St. James Area Tuesday and Blue Earth Area Thursday.
