Huskies to face Mainstreeters for 2A volleyball title

A Sauk Centre team on a 28-match winning streak is the opponent for the Jackson County Central volleyball team in the championship match of the state Class 2A volleyball tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Section 6AA champion Mainstreeters have a match record of 32-1 and are 84-10 in sets.

Sauk Centre opened its season at a tournament in Albany on Aug. 27-28 and won its first match 2-0 over Albany. The Mainstreeters then lost 2-1 to Watertown-Mayer and have not lost since. W-M lost 3-0 to Annandale in the Section 5AA finals.

The Huskies are the champions of Section 3AA and have a match record of 29-6 and a set record of 79-24.

At the state tournament, Jackson County Central has defeated Annandale 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-19) and Mounds Park Academy 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14).

Sauk Centre has won 3-1 over Greenway 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 25-10) and 3-0 over Hawley 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-23).

Why Mainstreeters?

Sauk Centre is the birthplace of Sinclair Lewis, a novelist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The town inspired his fictional Gopher Prairie, the setting of Lewis's 1920 novel Main Street.

Southwest Minnesota well represented

Three teams from southwest Minnesota will play for state titles on Saturday.

Big South Conference champion Marshall (32-2) faces Kasson-Mantorville (30-3) for the Class 3A title at 5 p.m.

In Class 1A, Minneota (31-4) meets Mayer Lutheran (31-2) at 1 p.m.

The Class 4A championship match is at 7 p.m. with Wayzata (33-0) taking on East Ridge (23-9).

SFC No. 1 seed

Sioux Falls Christian, one of the teams to beat Jackson County Central this season, is seeded first for the South Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament. That’s the middle of that state’s three-class state tournament format.

The Chargers (32-4) play eighth-seeded Parkston (21-14) next Thursday in Rapid City.
