Martin County West faces an elimination game in the Section 2A softball tournament when the Mavericks faces Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at 10 a.m. Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
The seventh-seeded Mavericks fell to second-seeded New Ulm Cathedral 3-2 in eight innings Thursday in the first round of the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Greyhounds scored one run in the seventh inning and then won the game in the eighth.
Maddie Carlson took the pitching loss for MCW, allowing three runs (none earned) on nine hits, walking one and striking out one.
Carlson also had two hits for the Mavericks including an RBI single. Cami Clow also singled and Lina Arnold had an RBI groundout.
Martin County West, 13-5, had been scheduled to play MLAC (14-5) during the regular season but the game was postponed. The other elimination game will have Nicollet (8-11) playing Cleveland (11-9).
In the winner’s bracket, Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s (17-0) faces Springfield (14-8) and New Ulm Cathedral (13-5) takes on Sleepy Eye (12-8).
