Fairmont scored the game’s final four goals as the third-seeded Cardinals defeated sixth-seeded Windom Area 7-2 in the opening round of the Section 3A girls hockey tournament Thursday.
The Cardinals had a pair of two-goal leads at 2-0 and 3-1 that the Eagles cut in half before Fairmont scored two goals past the midway point of the second period and two more early in the third.
Alexis Haycraft had six assists on the night for Fairmont. Mariel Parish had a three-point game with two goals and one assist.
Halyn Haycraft scored two goals for the Cardinals with Harper Artz, Avery Kurt and Lauren Bettin each scoring one.
Reagan Haugen scored on power play for Windom Area in the first period with Lyvia Mcmanigle recording an assist. Brekkyn Rossow scored the other goal for the Eagles.
Fiona Robillard made 26 saves in goal for Windom, which put 24 shots on Fairmont netminder Ilana Moeller.
Fairmont, 15-10-1, advances to play at second-seeded and five-time defending section champion Luverne (17-6-2) in the semifinals Saturday.
In Thursday’s other first-round game, fourth-seeded New Ulm shut out fifth-seeded Worthington 4-0. The Eagles (11-13-2) are scheduled to visit top-seeded Marshall (20-3-2) in Saturday’s other semifinal.
The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday in St. Peter.
