Jackson residents who have a sidewalk on their property in need of repair may be able to get some help with the cost from the City of Jackson.
The City of Jackson has created a "sidewalk reconstruction program" with funds available to match owners of residential property who wish to replace/repair public sidewalks.
The match is set at 70% for the property owner and 30% to the City. The amount of the City's match will not exceed $400, or $800 for properties with sidewalks on more than one side.
Applications will be approved based on a points system that will consider the following criteria:
Sidewalk is on a major or key walking route;
Significance of repairing the sidewalk on the City;
Applicant's property is adjacent to or near property to other applicants to this program;
Extent to which sidewalk is cracked, broken-up, or gone
Applicants' sidewalks will be evaluated by the Street Superintendent and the City Council 's Street Committee for recommendation to the City Council.
New sidewalks must be 5 feet wide and 3.5 inches thick and use 4000 lb. cement with controlled joints every 5 feet and expansion joints every 50 feet. Sidewalks must be built to all other City specifications.
After the City approves the contractor's work, the City will pay the contractor for the City's portion of the work with the property owner being liable for the property owner’s portion of the work.
