This special installment features a mixture of items I didn’t cover last Sunday and items I didn’t want to hold onto until this Sunday.
Drake Relays
Jackson County Central graduate Jessica Christoffer, a junior with the South Dakota State women’s track and field program, competed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines Thursday.
She placed seventh overall in the women’s 1500 meters with a time of 4:28.60. There were 29 entries in the event.
Tough night
Martin County West graduate Brandon Williamson made his fourth start and took his first loss for the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds Thursday.
He went 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on 5 hits, walking four, and striking out four. Williamson also had a balk and two wild pitches.
The Lookouts trailed the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs) 4-3 when he left the game and went on to lose 10-5.
For the season, Williamson has a 1-1 record. In 16.1 innings he has allowed 16 hits, 12 runs (12 earned), walked 15 and struck out 19.
Becker homers
Fairmont graduate Luke Becker hit his first home run of the season for the Wild Health Genomes in a 6-4 loss to the Gastonia Honey Hunters in an Atlantic League game Thursday night at Gastonia, N.C.
Here’s Becker’s round tripper:
In 29 plate appearances in seven games for the Lexington, Kentucky-based Genomes, Becker is 4-23 officially at the plate with four walks and two runs batted in.
Jacobsen gets win
JCC graduate Gavin Jacobsen, a freshman at Bethany Lutheran College, was the winning pitcher for the Vikings in a 11-1 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference win over Martin Luther College Tuesday in New Ulm.
Jacobsen pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits, walking three and striking out four.
On the season, Gavin has a 2-2 record. In 22 innings he has allowed 25 runs (19 earned) on 35 hits, walking 22 and fanning 23.
Bethany is 14-12 overall and is in third place in the UMAC standings with a 10-5 mark.
Shoen breaks records
Derek Shoen of Truman has broken two University of Mary single-season baseball records recently.
Wednesday at Marshall, he delivered a run-scoring single in the ninth inning of the second game of a doubleheader vs. Southwest Minnesota State to give him 49 runs batted in, breaking the previous mark of 48 that had stood since 1997.
Last week, he set the school home run record against Bemidji State in Cold Spring. He has 13, breaking the mark of 12 set in 1998.
SDSU spring football
JCC graduate Rudy Voss earned the start at quarterback in the South Dakota State spring football game in Brookings last weekend.
A former walk-on, Voss has made his way to the No. 2 spot on the Jackrabbits’ QB depth chart. Projected starter Mark Gronowski was held out of the game.
Voss was 13-for-26 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a TD on the first possession of the game.
Senf is medalist
Fairmont graduate Bergen Senf, a sophomore at St. Olaf College, picked up the first individual medalist honor of her collegiate career by winning the Carleton-St. Olaf Spring Invitational last weekend.
In blustery conditions, Senf posted a round of 76 (+4) that included three birdies in the opening round Saturday at Willinger's Golf Club in Northfield.
She then waited while most of the field had to complete its round on Sunday morning after a storm rolled in late in the day on Saturday. Senf would finish one shot ahead of Carleton's Kristin Miyagi.
Senf is the first Ole to win a tournament since April 20, 2013.
