Fairmont advances to Round of 16

Region 13C champion Fairmont advanced to the Round of 16 in the state Class C amateur baseball tournament with a 14-4 win in eight innings over Farming Saturday night at the Mini Met in Jordan.

The Martins will play at 4 p.m. Saturday in Jordan, where they will face the winner of Sunday’s game between Nisswa and Sartell.

Fairmont went scoreless in its first two at bats and then scored every inning after that. The Martins scored one run in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh and then ended the game early with a three-run eighth inning.

Derek Schoen had four hits and three runs batted in for Fairmont. Jon Traetow and Spencer Chirpich each had two hits.

Chirpich was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Collin Lovell, a draftee from Windom, went the final two innings, striking out three.
