ST. MICHAEL – Andrew Boyum’s final 3200-meter run as a high school athlete was far and away his best.
The Jackson County Central senior topped his own school record by 20 seconds as he earned a sixth-place medal with a time of 9:44.98 Thursday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Boyum narrowly beat two Luverne runners to the finish line, as Camden Janiszeski was seventh (9:46.44) and Owen Janiszeski eighth (9:47.01).
Winning the 3200 was Finn McCormick of Nova Classic (9:27.20).
Boyum still has one high school race remaining, Friday’s 1600 meter finals. He plans to compete in both cross country and track and field at Iowa Central Community College.
JCC’s girls 4×200-meter relay team advanced to the finals.
The team of Daysia Tomlin, Kendra Haar, Hannah Carson and Elsa Landherr recorded a time of 1:48.19, which is second best in school history. The Huskies’ foursome had the seventh-best qualifying time from the prelims.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa had the fastest time in Thursday’s prelims (1:46.07).
Quinn Landherr was in the mix to place in the pole vault, where cleared a personal-record 12 feet, 6 inches and finished 10th. He was one of five vaulters to go 10-6.
Jarod White of Pine Island won his second straight pole vault title, clearing 16-0.
Also Thursday, JCC’s Peyton Hanson had to medically scratch out of the prelims in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles after suffering an injury earlier this week.
The plan is for her to be reevaluated Friday in the hope she can compete in pole vault. She was 10th in pole vault at last year’s state meet.
In addition to the events already mentioned, scheduled to compete for the Huskies Friday are Elsa Landherr and Maci Farmer in girls triple jump at 4 p.m. and Caleb Vancura in discus at 5:15.
