ST. MICHAEL – Jackson County Central athletes earned two more medals Friday on the second day of the state Class A state track and field meet at St. Michael-Abertville High School.
Caleb Vancura earned the highest finish for the Huskies at the state meet as he placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 151-8.
Two of Vancura’s Section 2A rivals placed including Ethan Fischer of Maple River, who was first with a throw of 191-0. Blue Earth Area’s Luke Norman finished ninth (139-9).
JCC’s girls 4×200-relay team of Daysia Tomlin, Kendra Haar, Hannah Carson and Elsa Landherr placed sixth in a personal-best time of 1:47.43, breaking the mark of 1:48.19 they’d established in Thursday’s prelims. That’s the second-best time in school history.
The team of Ashley Lucht, Amanda Darling, Elizabeth Nasby and Emily Balster holds the record of 1:46.87, set in 2006.
Also Friday, Andrew Boyum placed 11th in the 1600 meters (4:32.51).

Jacob McCleary of Perham won the 1600 meters (4:21.12).
On Thursday, Boyum had placed sixth in the 3200 meters as he broke his own school record (9:44.98).
JCC had two girls compete in triple jump, with Elsa Landherr finishing 12th (33-4 ½) and Maci Farmer 15th (31-10 ½).
Grace VanErp of Ottertail Central won the triple jump (37-5 ¼). Redwood Valley’s Kendall Huhnerkoch was fourth (35-6).
Peyton Hanson had to withdraw from Friday’s pole vault competition due to an injury. She was 10th in pole vault last year. Hanson was also forced to scratch from both the 100- and 300-meter hurdle prelims on Thursday.
Luverne finished fourth in the boys team standings and fifth in the girls.
Nova Classical Academy won a tight race for the boys title with 47.5 points, followed by Perham (47), Minneapolis North (46) and the Cardinals (43).
Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball was the girls winner with 81 points, followed by Concordia Academy (68), Zumbrota-Mazeppa (48), Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland/Southland (48) and Luverne (41).
Class AA
Fairmont is tied for fifth place in the team standings after the first day in Class AA with 12 points on a pair of fourth-place finishes.
Laura Thompson was fourth in the 3200 meters as she cut more than eight seconds off her own school record (10:51.79). Ellie Hernes was fourth in long jump (17’1½).
Cloquet leads the team standings with 26 points.
For the Fairmont boys Friday, Hank Artz was fifth in shot put (50-11 ¾).
Fergus Falls is the Class AA boys team leader.
