Alexandria tops Marshall for Class 3A title

Alexandria defeated three-time defending champion Marshall 3-1 in the championship match of the Class 3A tournament at the state volleyball tournament at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Saturday night. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22.

Junior hitter Hadley Thull, who has committed to play basketball at South Dakota State, recorded 23 kills and 16 digs for the Cardinals, who finish 23-10.

Alexandria is coached by Marshall High School graduate Mary Byrne, who coached the Tigers in 1991 and 1992, reaching the finals in 1992. She has coached college volleyball at South Dakota State and North Carolina State.

Marshall was making its 17^th appearance in a state championship match in its 33^rd trip to the tournament. The Tigers have won nine state titles.

Junior hitter Reese Drake led Big South Conference champion Marshall with 20 kills.

Mayer Lutheran topped Minneota 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-17) for the Class 1A crown.

Senior middle blocker Marley Martin and sophomore outside hitter Courtney Tuttle paced a balanced attack with 10 kills each. Junior setter Izabelle Keaveny put up 31 set assists.

Hawley claimed the Class 2A title with a 3-1 win over Southwest Christian (25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 25-22). Sophomore outside hitter Katarina Vetter had 16 kills and 20 digs for the Nuggets.

Lakeville South was the Class 4A champion, beating Champlin Park 3-2 (25-16, 25-17, 14-25, 20-25, 15-10). It was the fourth meeting of the season between the teams, with each winning twice.

Junior outside hitter Romi Chlebeck finished with 20 kills and sophomore hitter Elleora Utecht added 17 for the Cougars.
