Martin County West is still going in the Section 2A softball tournament. The Mavericks won a home game on Friday and then split a pair of tight games on Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
Maddie Carlson led MCW to its 5-1 Friday win over Nicollet at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex in Welcome.
In the pitcher’s circle, Carlson went the distance, not allowing an earned run on three hits, walking one and striking out 14. At the plate she had three hits and had one run batted in.
Courtey Anderson had two hits including a home run and Addy Wohlhuter also had two hits. Getting one hit apiece were Emily Anderson, Rowan Faber and Hannah Rosenberg.
Carlson had another great effort in the circle vs. New Ulm Cathedral as she led the third-seeded Mavericks to a 3-0 win over second-seeded and defending state Class 1A champion Greyhounds. Cathedral had defeated MCW 11-0 nine days earlier in the Tomahawk Valley Conference championship game.
This time Carlson pitched a one-hit shutout, walking one and striking out five. The lone hit for the Greyhounds was by Jayde Altermatt with one out in the third inning.
Martin County West had four hits, with three coming from the 7-8-9 hitters (Wohlhuter, Faber and Rosenberg) in their batting order. The other was from leadoff hitter Lillie Schultz.
Altermatt took the pitching loss for Cathedral as she went six innings with Abbey Hillesheim finishing up.
That advanced the Mavericks to a matchup with top-seeded and Class 1A No. 1 United South Central as the final two undefeated teams in the tournament, which the Rebels won 2-1. USC scored single runs in the first and second innings and MCW scored its run in the fifth.
USC’s Mariah Anderson limited the Mavericks to one unearned run on two hits, walking two and striking out 13. Carlson and Courtney Anderson had the MCW hits.
Carlson took the pitching loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits, not walking a batter and fanning six.
The tournament resumes with two games Tuesday at Caswell. New Ulm Cathedral (21-3) plays Sleepy Eye (17-6) at 5 p.m., with Martin County West (20-4) taking on the winner at 7 p.m.
United South Central (22-0) is waiting in the championship round on Thursday.
