Class 1A ninth-ranked Martin County West moved its record to 6-0 on the season Friday with a 6-0 Southwest (East) District football win over Murray County Central in the Mavericks’ homecoming game in Sherburn. The Rebels are 4-2.
It was the third time in 10 years MCW had started the season 5-0. Last year the Mavericks lost to MCC at Slayton and in 2013 Martin County West lost in Week 7 at Wabasso.
The lone score of the game came on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Zach Anderson to Carver Rohman on a fourth-and-goal play with 1:12 remaining in the first half. Wyatt Williamson’s extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving the score at 6-0.
Anderson later made a big play on defense for the Mavericks, intercepting a pass with 3:15 to play in the game. Back on offense, Anderson ran the ball twice to pick up a first down and seal the win.
Anderson led Martin County West in rushing with 53 yards on nine carries. He was 5-for-7 passing for 75 yards.
Wyatt Williamson caught three passes for 46 yards.
Max Olson led the MCW defense with 10 tackles. Williamson was credited with eight tackles and also had a quarterback sack.
The Mavericks travel to Springfield for a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
