USC pulled away in the seventh inning for a 6-1 win over Jackson in the first round of the Southwest Sub-State American Legion baseball tournament at Wabasso Thursday.
"It was a close one-run contest for six innings," said Jackson coach Blaise Jacobsen. "USC started a bunting spree and we did not get the outs. Logan Butzon pitched a fantastic game but just didn’t put the ball in play enough."
USC scored two runs in the top of the third inning.
Jackson cut the margin in half in the bottom of the fifth when Leighton Polz led off the inning with a triple and scored on an error.
USC scored four times in the top of the seventh. Jackson got a two-out single but that was it in the bottom of the inning.
Butzon took the loss, allowing two hits and striking out 10 in six innings.
Trace Michelson had two hits for Post 130. Also getting hits for Jackson were Polz, Gavin Jacobsen, Luke Vesey and Ben Spaeth.
Post 130 now faces Pipestone in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Friday.
