Plenty of ground to cover today with amateur baseball, college volleyball and racing.
Amateur baseball
Jackson's Ryan Rasche, a draftee of Windom, pitched for the Pirates in their 2-0 loss to Sobieski at the state Class C tourney Saturday at Waconia.
He went two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, not walking a batter and striking out one. Collin Lovell had gone the first six innings.
Caleb Strack, a draftee from the Randall Cubs, went the distance for the Skis, striking out 17, allowing only one hit and walking four. Luke Gilbertson had Windom's lone hit in the eighth inning.
Region 13C champion Luverne has a first-round bye and plays in the second round at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Chaska vs. the winner of Sunday's game between Eagle Lake and Cannon Falls.
The Redbirds drafted two players from Jackson for the state tournament, Gavin Jacobsen and Ben Scheevel.
The other Region 13C team in the state tourney is the Milroy Irish, who are scheduled to play Maple Lake at 7 p.m. Sunday at Hamburg after being rained out on Friday.
College volleyball
Dakota Wesleyan, coached by Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield graduate Lindsey Wilber, has started the season 4-0.
The Tigers didn't lose a match at the KCAC Fall Fling at Hutchinson, Kan., beating Tabor, Bethany, Saint Mary and Friends, all 3-0.
DWU goes to Aberdeen to play Presentation Tuesday. Wesleyan plays its first 13 matches away from Mitchell before hosting Northwestern on Sept. 15.
Racing
Friday's scheduled show at Fairmont Raceway was rained out. There are two events remaining on the schedule at Fairmont, this Friday (Aug. 27) and Sept. 3.
Jody Rosenboom (Rock Rapids) won the 25-lap Midwest Sprint Touring Series feature Saturday night at Off Road Speedway in Norfolk, Neb. Rounding out the top five were Seth Brahmer (Wisner, Neb.), Jack Dover (Springfield, Neb.), Jason Martin (Lincoln) and Brant O'Banion (Parker, S.D.). Next on the MSTS schedule are the Power Series Nationals, Sept. 3-4 at Jackson Motorplex and Sept. 5 at Huset's Speedway in Brandon.
