
The Martin County West softball team has won 10 straight games after outscoring its opponents 35-5 in winning three games Saturday in Walnut Grove.
MCW edged Yellow Medicine East 6-5 in eight innings, downed Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 17-0 in five innings and shut out Lakeview 12-0 in six innings.
In the first game of the day, the Sting scored two in the top of the first and that’s where the score stayed until the Mavericks plated two in the bottom of the fourth.
YME took the lead right back with a three-run top of the fifth, but MCW again rallied to tie the game again by scoring two in the bottom of the sixth.
Martin County West would win in walk off fashion in the bottom of the eighth.
Lillie Schultz singled to lead off the inning. After the first was recorded on an infield popup, Schultz was caught stealing at second base for the second out.
But the Mavericks weren’t done. Emily Schettler singled for second hit of the game and was replaced by courtesy runner Ivy Olson.
Emily Anderson followed with her fourth hit of the game, a triple to right field that brough Olson around to score and MCW had the win.
Emily Anderson was 4-for-5 for the Mavericks. Schettler was 2-4.
Maddie Carlson went the full eight innings in the pitcher’s circle to pick up the win, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out nine.
Sydney Clow shut out RRCWWG in the Mavs’ second game of the day. The lone hit she allowed was a third-inning single and she walked one and fanned seven.
Emily Anderson was 3-4 with three runs batted in and two stolen bases; Rowan Faber was 2-3; and Hannah Rosenberg was 2-4 , was hit by a pitch and had three steals.
Olson had a triple and Addy Wohlhuter doubled.
In the final game, Courtney Anderson was 2-3 with two doubles, with Emily Anderson and Rosenberg both going 2-4. Schultz tripled and Carlson doubled.
Emily Anderson finished the day 9-13.
Carlson pitched Martin County West’s second straight shutout. In five innings she gave up three hits, walked one and struck out 10.
The Mavericks are 16-2 on the season. They have two regular-season games remaining as they host Sleepy Eye on Tuesday and play New Ulm Cathedral in the Tomahawk Valley Conference championship game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
