TRIMONT – Martin County West’s boys basketball team is 11-0 to start the season. Defense is a big reason for that undefeated start.
Coach Cliff Anderson’s team is third among Class 1A teams in the state in points allowed per game according to statistics posted on Minnesota-scores.net.
And the Mavericks are scheduled to see one of the teams above them statistically later this week.
MCW can’t get caught looking ahead to that matchup.
The Mavericks have two games to play before that as they host St. James Area (6-7) in a nonconference game on Tuesday in Trimont and then face Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain (4-7) in a Valley Conference contest Thursday in Granada.
Martin County West is then back at home Friday in Trimont vs. Class 1A No. 12 Spring Grove (9-2). Losses for the Lions have come to Minnesota Class 1A No. 4 Rushford-Peterson and Iowa Class 1A No. 3 North Linn.
Spring Grove leads the state in points allowed per game with 37.4. Liberty Classical Academy is second at 40.3, with MCW third at 40.5.
Another future opponent for the Mavericks, Hayfield, is sixth at 46.4. MCW is slated to host the Vikings on Feb. 18.
