Jackson County Central had five individual champions with the final one in that group allowing the Minnesota Class 1A top-ranked Huskies to edge Iowa Class 2A (middle of three classes) third-ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton for the team title at the Austin Roberts Memorial wrestling tournament Saturday in Spencer.
JCC topped the 11-team field with 255.5 points, with SBL second with 254.
Caleb Vancura was the fifth wrestler to win his weight class for the Huskies, with each scoring 26 team points or more. Nolan Ambrose scored 28 points, followed by Logan Butzon (27.5), Matthew Haley (27), Dylan Withers (26.5) and Vancura (26).
Vancura gave up the first takedown in his 220-pound title match with Ayden Hoag of LeMars but would come back to win 6-5 and secure the points needed for JCC to win the team title. He’d won his two earlier matches in the tournament by fall.
Vancura is 6-0 on the season.
Ambrose won the 138-point title with three pins in a combined 2:47. He’s 10-0 with each of those wins coming via pin.
Butzon (11-0) won in sudden-victory overtime to capture the 152-pound title. He’d won once by technical fall and twice by falls to reach the finals.
Withers (9-1) won by fall, major decision tech fall for the 170-pound title; and Haley (8-1) had two falls sandwiched around a major decision to place first at 195.
Three wrestlers placed third for Jackson County Central, Kayden Eller (106), Isaac Rodriguez (120) and Thomas Freking (145).
Finishing third were Benjamin Dahlin (132) and Isaiah Rodriguez (160); Braydan Winter (182) and Cameron Scholten (285) were fourth; and Dallas Gossen (113) was eighth.
Also from JCC, Seth Stai (170) placed third, Kyler Thier (106) was fourth, while Landon Andrews (138) and Quinn Landherr (145) and Trey Rossow (160) were all seventh.
