Answers
1. The Montreal Canadiens scored the most goals by a team in a single NHL playoff game, as they defeated the Quebec Bulldogs 16-3 on March 3, 1920.
2. Montreal scored seven goals in the third period of an 11-0 win over Toronto in Game 5 of their semifinal series on March 30, 1944 as the Canadiens won the series over the Maple Leafs 4-1.
3. Wayne Gretzky holds the record for most career playoff points in the NHL, with a total of 382 points (122-260 = 382).
4. Scotty Bowman had 223 coaching wins. His record was 223-130 (.632). He led the St. Louis Blues (24 wins), Montreal Canadiens (70), Buffalo Sabres (18), Pittsburgh Penguins (23), and Detroit Red Wings (86).
5. The NHL player with the most career playoff wins is Patrick Roy, with a total of 151. He played for the Montreal Canadiens (70 wins) and Colorado Avalanche (81).
6. Bobby Orr. The legendary Boston Bruins blueliner won three straight league Hart trophies as league MVP in the early 1970s. In two of those years (1970 and 1972), Orr also captured the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable playoff performer.
7. Joe Sakic scored eight overtime goals in the playoffs with the Colorado Avalanche. He had two overtime winners in both 1996 and 2004.
8. The Philadelphia Flyers were the first NHL expansion team to defeat an Original Six team in a playoff series, beating the New York Rangers 4-3 in the 1974 Stanley Cup semifinals. They then went on to win the Stanley Cup that year, defeating another Original Six team, the Boston Bruins, 4-2.
9. Octopus. The tradition started on April 15, 1952, when Pete and Jerry Cusimano, brothers and storeowners in Detroit's Eastern Market, hurled an octopus into the rink of Olympia Stadium. Having eight arms, the octopus symbolized the number of playoff wins the Red Wings needed to win the Stanley Cup at the time. The team would go on to sweep the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens en route to winning the championship.
10: The Pittsburgh Penguins. They won their last 11 games in 1992, winning the final three games in a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers and then sweeping the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. Pittsburgh started the 1993 playoffs with three straight wins over the New Jersey Devils in a series it eventually won 4-1.
