Answers

1: The North Stars first appearance in the Final was in 1981 when they lost to the New York Islanders 4-1. That was the second of four straight titles for the Islanders.

2: The 1951 Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1, with all five games decided in overtime. The series winning goal in Game 5 was scored by Bill Barilko. More on his story will come in a separate newsletter.

3: Scotty Bowman won nine, five with the Montreal Canadiens, three with the Detroit Red Wings and one with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Montreal’s Toe Blake is second with eight.

4: Chris Pronger, a Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman, scored for the Edmonton Oilers against the Carolina Hurricanes on June 5, 2006

5: Pittsburgh defeated Minnesota 8-0 at Met Center in Bloomington in Game 6 of the 1991 Final to win the series 4-2. What were the shots on goal totals you ask? The North Stars outshot the Penguins 39-28. Tom Barrasso recorded the shutout in goal. Seven players scored goals for Pittsburgh. Joe Mullen was the lone player with two goals.

6: Patrick Roy won the Smythe award three times. He won it with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986 and 1993 and with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001. His No. 33 jersey is retired by both franchises.

7: The Philadelphia Flyers won the title in 1974, defeating the Boston Bruins 4-2 in the Final. To reach the Final, the Flyers defeated the Atlanta Flames 4-0 and the New York Rangers 4-3.

8: Canadiens legend and NHL Hall of Famer Maurice Richard, with 34 goals. That’s four more than Jean Beliveau.

9: Jacques Plante has the most career wins by a goalie in the Stanley Cup Finals, with 25 wins, one more than Ken Dryden.
10: In 1928 the New York Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final against the Montreal Maroons, but a circus moved into Madison Square Garden and took priority over the hockey team. As a result, team management decided to play the entire best-of-five series in Montreal. The Rangers won the series 3-2.
