For the second time in three days, Windom Arena was the site of a remarkable hockey feat Saturday.
The Windom Area girls hockey team put 85 shots on goal in its nonconference game vs. Prairie Centre Saturday afternoon but couldn’t get one in the net in a 1-0 loss to the Blue Devils.
On Thursday, Sonny Heil of the Windom boys had a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals uninterrupted by either team) and each was a shorthanded marker.
On Saturday the Eagle girls team was on the other end of an unusual occurrence as goalie Kennedy Lemke held Windom at bay to give her team the win. The Prairie Centre co-op consists of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Browerville, Sauk Centre and Royalton.
The Eagles recorded 37 shots on goal in the first period, 29 in the second and 19 in the third.
Lemke’s 37 first-period saves are the fourth-most in a single period in state history according to the Minnesota State High School League website.
The record is 47 by Worthington’s Taylor Baumhoefner in the first period of a game vs. New Ulm in 2007.
Lemke finished with 85 saves, sixth most ever for a goalie in state history.
Former Windom Area goalie Brooklyn Drahota holds four of the top nine marks in state history. Lists of the save leaders for a period and in a game follow later in this newsletter.
Kyra Swanson scored the lone goal of the game for Prairie Centre at 4:59 of the third period.
Prairie Centre had 16 shots, with Lily McNea making 15 saves for Windom Area.
The Blue Devils have a 2-5 record, while the Eagles are 3-8. The teams play again on Dec. 27 in the first round of a tournament in Benson.
Windom Area’s next game is Tuesday at Austin (1-8). Puck drop for the Eagle and Packers is at 7 p.m. at Riverside Arena. Windom won the first meeting 6-1 on Nov. 18.
