Hadley Wachal’s homer lifts Huskies over Chargers
Hadley Wachal’s walk-off home run kept Jackson County Central unbeaten in the Section 3AA softball tournament as the Huskies were 3-2 winners over Dassel-Cokato Saturday in Marshall.
JCC picked up its 20th win (the Huskies are 20-3) of the season and advances to play Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta (19-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, also in Marshall. The Tigers were 6-4 winners over Pipestone on Saturday.
D-C, which had beat Jackson County Central three straight times in the section tourney in recent years, led 2-0 Saturday as the Chargers scored one run in the first and added another in the fifth.
The Huskies got on the board and eventually tied the game in the sixth inning.
Braelyn Boogerd tripled to lead off the inning and she scored on Kinley VanDeVere’s bunt single. VanDeVere stole second base and scored from there as she came all the way around on a bunt by Mady Wachal, tying the game.
Mady Wachal put the Chargers down in order in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for Hadley Wachal’s dramatics in the home half of the inning.
Mady Wachal went the distance to record the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two runs (one earned on six hits and striking out 12.
Jackson County Central had only four hits, with three coming in the final two innings.
There’s also an elimination game at 5 p.m. Tuesday as Windom (13-10) plays Dassel-Cokato (16-5).
The JCC-MACA winner advances to Thursday’s championship round, while the loser meets the Windom-DC loser in a game scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday.
