Brandon Williamson threw four shutout innings for the Everett AquaSox in a Seattle Mariners High A Spring Training game Tuesday.
Williamson faced 13 batters, walked one and struck out eight in his outing vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits.
A Martin County West graduate, Williamson was selected by the Mariners in the second round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft out of Texas Christian University. He was the 59th overall selection.
He was assigned to Short-A Everett, where he had an earned-run average of 2.35 in 10 appearances with the AquaSox in 2019. In 15 and one-third innings, he allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits, walked five, hit one batter and struck out 25.
“We think he was one of the more underrated guys in the last year’s draft,” said Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto “We were ecstatic to get him where we did.”
“He has the ability to be anything — a top of the rotation starter to an electric back-end bullpen guy,” said Dipoto.
Williamson did not pitch in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season, but he was featured on the Mariners 60-man player pool in Tacoma throughout the 2020 regular season.
