More notes
Staples-Motley won the Class 1A title as he became the first coach in state history to coach three different schools to state championships. He has coached 20 state championship teams, 16 at Apple Valley, three at Shakopee and one at S-M. The Cardinals were 24-3 this season, putting Jackson’s career record at 945-65-4, a .934 percentage.
Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran won the Class 2A state title, its first ever.
St. Michael-Albertville won the Class 3A title, the 12th in school history. The Knights also have 11 runner-up finishes (two of those were to JCC in Class 2A in 1999 and 2000).
Staples-Motley freshman Gage Bjerga, the 107-pound champion in 2024, is 42-3 at 121.
St. Michael-Albertville’s Landon Robideau, a senior 160-pounder, has not lost since his freshman season. This season, he is 40-0 and could become a four-time state champion. He is an Oklahoma State recruit.
Simley sophomore Charli Raymond remains on course to continue making history. Already the first girl to win a Minnesota State High School League wrestling crown three years ago, she has added two more. The 118-pounder is 34-0 this season. If she completes her career with six individual titles, it will match the mark of six crowns captured by Apple Valley’s Mark Hall from 2011-2016.
Northfield junior Caley Graber is ranked No. 2 nationally at 118. She is 7-0 this season.
Pine Island junior Lauren Elsmore, the state champion at 112 a year ago, is 30-3 this season at 130.
